Now, when linking two gpu's through SLI, is it absolutely required that they are both the same exact card, or can they be differet models, or even different brands (1 nvidia and 1 ati)?

they have to be the same model card (ie 2*6600gt or 2*6800 or 2*6800gt or 2*6800u), but they can be different brands.

identical cards/brands would be ideal.

Indeed, it's the only thing Nvidia will certify, meaning that it's the only way you can get technical support.

wtih ati's sli imitation, which is coming out in several months, i believe it will allow you to use different cards in a multi-rendering sequence.

might be the case. But I'm sure they mean different ATI cards.. Not mix ati, nvidia. s3 and so on. If that would be the case I would just have everything onboard and buy 2 Pci-e cards and rest PCI cards and have a 8 gfx card rig :D

With most cards being reference boards with another brand stamped on(if that) it shouldn't matter much, so long as you get one of said reference boards.
Granted, tech support would be unavailable, but how many people actually use tech support for video cards?

Exactly. That's what this site is for.

Oh what do you work for ATI or something? Mik3y gave an opinion not a fact idiot. I HIGHLY doubt there will be any performance differences between the two as far as SLI goes.

Are you really from the US?
Someone who(presumably) speaks English as their mother tongue can't possibly be that bad at it, right?
