SLI comparisons

Hello,

Looking at getting the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium and was wondering what would get the better gaming performance? Still trying to fully understand the SLI technology.

1 of these ASUS Extreme N6800GT - Graphics adapter - GF 6800 GT - PCI Express x16 - 256 MB GDDR3 - DVI - TV out $233.34

or 2 of these MSI NX6600-TD256ESP - Graphics adapter - GF 6600 - PCI Express x16 - 256 MB DDR II - DVI - HDTV out $198.92 (for both)

When the great suggestion of MSI NX7600GT-T2D256E - Graphics adapter - GF 7600 GT - PCI Express x16 - 256 MB GDDR3 - DVI - HDTV out . is only $187.00 ..ordering my setup today thanks for the input. Maybe I wont have to upgrade till next year 🙂

As a general rule, never buy SLI cards if there is a single card that will outperform the dual card setup.

IMO, for the rough target of $400 for motherboard + video card which you appear to be aiming for, I would recommend a split more along the lines of $100/300 for mobo/vid card as opposed to $170/230 mobo/vid card. You will get more bang for the buck.

I would suggest an ASUS A8N-E, which is very similar to the A8N-SLI Premuim, but based on the nForce4 Ultra chipset instead of the SLI version - it even looks like it's built on the same PCB design (regrettably it's not black). This board is $99 shipped at newegg. Then find yourself a good 7900GT or X1800XT 256MB for around $300, and you will have yourself the makings of a gaming rig that would blow the doors off of an A8N-SLI Premium paired up with either of the video cards you parted out above.

This is good advice, the only thing I'd change is I'd get this sli motherboard for $95 shipped, and a 7900GT so you have the option to SLI should you desire.
