SLI/CF Becoming more viable options?

Normally when someone would come to the AT forums wanting to build a new system and wondering about SLI or CF the members of the forum would always say that SLI or CF was pointless unless you bought both cards at once, since by the time the price drops and you need the extra power, a single gpu card was out there that could out-perform most multi-gpu configurations from the previous generation.

Now however, since the pure performance capability of single gpu cards being released on the market are giving us diminishing returns, are more members here considering just adding on a 3 series card from ATI or an 8 series card from nVidia to their system with the low prices and all? (Might not apply to someone with a 3870 or 3850 since the 4850 itself is pretty darn cheap, so I guess this question is more aimed at 8 series nVidia card owners)

Also to add on, I guess straight out SLI/CF is also becoming more interesting to members here since the 4850/4870/9800GTX/9800GTX+ return some nice numbers in multi-gpu set-ups and still cost less than the GTX 280 or 260.

Edit: Actually no, that topic is covering SLI/CF on single cards, I'm referring to a scenario where someone with an 8800 GT let's say, considers and buys a second 8800 GT and SLIs it, or someone with a 3870 gets another one and runs them crossfire.

It's really just a matter of market conditions aligning just right so SLI'ing something like the 8800GT makes sense in more situations than usual. This trend could end in another month or two even depending on how prices on the newer high-end cards fall.
