"SLI" has already arrived, although it's nothing without a dual-PEG MB (not available yet, right?).
Little disappointing that he only got 400/1100 stock speeds on those $620 cards, but quadruple DVI sounds dangerous. >

I don't get the "already arrived", then posting a link to the place the guy in my link bought his stuff?
In any case, the value of a card doesn't hang on it's highly variable, and risky, OCing ability. I'd be amazed if anyone was actually foolish enough to risk OCing $620 cards that will be wedged in next to each other, but it's their money to burn. (literally)
Why anyone would need to OC a rig like this is beyond me- what would it possibly benefit you other than 3dmarks? SLId 6800Us have to be pretty cpu bound- it's not like "Dude! The extra GB/sec memory bandwidth puts my 6800U SLI rig over the top! Now I can run 20X16, 8X16X!"
Rollo, I meant that SLI-able 6600GTs have been on sale for a little while now--ahead of these 6800Us. I think I did the same thing to another thread of yours, one for PCIe 6600s (and I linked other, slower PCIe cards)?
I also meant I was disappointed that eVGA didn't bump the clocks be default for this kind of cash. (Obviously anyone dishing out for SLI isn't strapped for cash, but $620 for a plain 6800U just hurts to think about.) And I sure don't expect or want him to OC a dual-6800U system ... but you know someone will, soon enough.

I don't know Pete, when people were paying $800-$1000 a couple weeks ago on FleaBay, $620 for a 6800U seems like a bargain.

just waitin on the motherboards.
hopefully there will be a s478 SLI board so we dont have to upgrade (???) to prescott garbage.
i noticed there are AGP cards that claim SLI capability. (NV 6800LE)
is there gonna be dual AGP boards?
we need alot more info from NV and the board makers.... now!

I would think that would be PCIe8x + AGP boards. As there will be mobos that have both.
AGP will soon be over and done with. No reason to take away from PCI-e's ability to SLi by giving the same function to "old" standards.

I just wanted to be informed on this issue, my question was purely of theoretical nature....

Nevertheless it will be a good option for those willing to pay this amount. At least until NV50/R520 will be here to make the proper comparisons...
People are still buying 9800, which plays ALL games today at satisfactory speeds at medium-high resolutions and graphics detail. That includes the newest game engines doom3/farcry (and probably HL2) which will be the basis for most of the games in the next two years.
Ergo, 9700/9800 will last about two more years, while 6800GT will last about 5 years, or almost indefenitely in technonlogy time scale.
A little bit optimistic aren't we?
Anyway depends on the needs of each one of us,but even in this case, if you want my opinion your timetable has really exaggerative predictions...

I think there is a chance that this gen/ next gen cards will last a bit longer then we think. It all depends on amd. If amd can get us more processing power like they have been lately, at a steady rate, then all is well and we will be upgrading like regular. But if they hit a wall like intel has, and are forced to go dual core as their primary source of "increase", and games arent coded in multiple threads, then our cards will be lasting awhile longer then we think. Honestly i think it wont happen. But u never know, he may be right with his 5 yr prediction.
