So I was in this weird situation recently. I had a one night stand with a girl, and I tried to string that into a reasonable relationship. Then, after a week and 2 encounters, we're in bed together and about to get it on, and she says to me, "I don't want to get hurt again" (re: old boyfriend), turns around, and goes to sleep! I guess there was some sort of communication problem or something: it ended up we slept together w/o sex for about 3 weeks. then I broke it off because I just couldn't take it anymore, and she doesn't understand why.

You can't retract the sex after a precedent of sex has been established. That calls into question the reliability of all aspects of the relationship! Plus you don't get any sex.

Did she bother giving you any further explaination than "I don't want to get hurt again"?

smartest thing you ever did! Relationships that start with sex are doomed for failure.
 
I sleep with my girlfriend every night, and it does not happen every night...

Becomes less important the longer the relationship is... 🙂 It happens when it happens 🙂
