Sleeping Sickness?? HELP!

This has been an ongoing issue for me so I've decided to post back hoping for some assistance to resolve this issue.
First, my system;
Gateway Performance 500
P3/500, 384MB RAM, 46G hard drive, connected to the internet via two way cable modem.
Board: GATEWAY Tabor3 WS440BX Tabor3 4000504-211
Serial Number: A
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. 4W4SB0X0.15A.0019.P14 05/09/2000
Just did a fresh install, on a brand new hard drive, of W2K Pro. Before doing anything else, no peripherals installed, no drivers installed, nothing except the OS itself is on this system. I'm attempting to configure the standby mode. The computer readily slips into standby, but will not awaken when I move the mouse or press any keys. I'm forced to shut down manually and then restart each time.
Under the Power Options Properties>Power Schemes I have configured standby as follows:
Home/Office Desk
Turn off monitor: Never
Turn off hard disks: Never
System standby: After 15 minutes
Under Advanced tab, both Options are unchecked, and Power buttons is set as Power Off.
Under Hibernate tab, Enable hibernate support is unchecked.
And under UPS tab, I have not set anything although I am using the APC Back-UPS Office 500 model to protect my system.
The computer is ACPI compliant. I have the latest BIOS update, also.
Does anyone have a similar experience? If so, how was it resoved? Thank you.

Carbo-

1st install the drivers!!! Standby will not work correctly with certain MS base drivers especially if you have do not have a Video driver loaded. Next I would check to see if when the system goes into standby if you have a flashing LED on the front of the system. IF you do then try hitting the power button to see if that brings it back. Some of the IBM systems that I have worked on required that. Next I would look to see what HAL it is installing (Device Mangler/and Computer) If it is the Standard PC then your BIOS isn't ACPI compliant and that may be where part of your problem is.

I expect the issue that you are seeing to be that the Spec that your board was done to (PC98?) may have required the use of the Power Button to return from standby and that is where the problem is.
