Sleeping 16+ hours a day

Been sleeping a lot lately, and I'm missing out on a lot of things during the day. Usually when I'm up I'm always tired anyways, no matter how much I've slept. Sometimes I sleep 14-15-16 hours straight, sometimes I'll sleep 10 hours and take a 6-8 hour nap later in the day. This started about a week ago. I've always had a lot of sleeping problems, and I've had low energy all the time, for a long time. I can't believe I'm sleeping so much this week though, something ain't right. 16+ hours a day of sleep is too much, plus I'm feeling pretty tired when I'm awake usually.

I had a $1000 blood test done a few months ago (why it cost $1000 I really have no idea, was just a normal blood test... insurance didn't cover it either =/ ) - They didn't find anything unusual, besides that I apparently didn't have Mononucleoses in my system anymore, which I thought I still did. I had Mono for about a year previous to that. Is it possible that I have mono again or is it one of those things you can only get once? I forgot.

What else could be the prob? I'm going to see my Doc this week, hopefully he'll find something wrong with me...I mean, well, yeah. Sleeping 16+ hours a day is about the best 'sickness' i could think of though, so I'm not too worried about it, heh. Much better than sleeping 4-5 hours a day. But, like I said I'm missing out on a lot of things during the day and getting little exercise...more positive points? Eh, I guess not :p

yeah, sleeping that much can be a vicious cycle. best advice is to go exercise on a regular basis (like coquito said). that'll get your energy level up, and keep it there.

At some point (to me that would be 12+ hours) you really get tired proportionally to how much you slept... There are days in which I just lay in my bed all day, and I just cant get myself to get up, because Im simply too tired and cant stop sleeping, I hate it

"NOW Im gonna get up... GET UP GET UP"

*fails*

"ahh.. screw that, Ill sleep one more hour"

It's kind of a vicious cycle if you just sit on your ass and do nothing. Go out with some friends and do something.

I was sleeping 12 hours a day at one time and it turned out to be a serious sinus infection that literally drained me of all my energy. After some meds I felt better

Could be lots of things. Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and numerous other dreadful things.

How old are you?

If you are able to you need to exercise regularly. People think this will cost energy but in fact gives you more.

Anyway, listen to your doctor... I'm only a former pre-med. :p

If it were me I'd think something was wrong, but if you say you have a history of this sort of thing then maybe you just need to break out of the cycle. Like others said, exercise. Are you smoking a lot of pot lately? :p Seriously, when I was a real head I was sleeping 12 hours a night. I get 6-7 now.

ZGood point, if he's a stoner then problem solved. Weed makes you way lazy... I gave that up years ago. I'm way too paranoid to be doing illegal drugs, lol.

Are you overweight? You could have sleep apnea. Other than that, try and get some exercise and make it a routine. Have something to do at 8am so that you have to get up. I sleep way too much myself.

What feelings are you trying to escape from?

Depressed?

Financial problems?

People trying to collect money from you?

Been there, and done that. Normally in those times, I was broke, over obligated, and there were people I just didn't want to face or couldn't face. Sleep became an escape.

Besides the physical, I am just trying to share another view.

maybe you need more iron? i suppose the blood test would have showed that...but you might have anemia. ask the doctor. maybe he can perscribe some mutli-vitamins that includes iron. but what will help is excersing.

sleeping 16hours a day is not normal.

depression? Seriously sometimes it happens even with nothing to be depressed about. I would sleep 15+ hours a day easily. Plenty of excercise, a good diet and no alchohol, drugs or stimulants(caffienne too) will definately help break the cycle.

I think the best thing to do after getting those tests and still being sleepy is to start working out. I need to start working out again too. I hate sleeping, but when I do it I can't get enough of it. :p

Some of you may take over-sleeping problems lightly, but it's a real problem for me.

For the past few years, I'd sleep 10+ hours on weekdays frequently and be late for work. I often sleep 15+ hours on weekends. =(

I've had sleeping issues all my life.

What do you eat when you're awake? How much physical activity is your body getting on a weekly basis? What do you do when you're awake? How old are you?

Doctor's love to find problems and prescribe some magical pills, Eli said it best when he described humans as floppy chemical bags. Might as well just toss another pill in there... anyway, not anything personal to you, but make sure you're eating well (get a nice variety of vegetables, fruits, spices, meats, etc. in your diet) and try to fit in 30 minutes of jogging or something everyday.

Jesus Conky, just give him a gun with one bullet will ya! ;)

My mother sleeps a lot too. Though she's in her late 40's and shes over weight. She's also a diabetic.

Though they can see if you have diabetes and some times cancer in a blood tests. They can also see some early signs of infections and also signs of heart disease. A partially blocked heart valve causing your heart to beat more rapidly or work harder could also make you tired.

Could be anything. Though consider it a blessing that sleeping is your only syntom.
