Last year my parents were on vacation and my younger sister was house-sitting. Their lab was old, but seemed to be doing ok. One day my sister went out to feed him and he was hudding at the bottom of the stairs in the garage and couldnt move. He was just wimpering, could not move his legs. His old body just gave out.

Naturally my sister freaked out, I raced over there from work and carried him up the stairs. We put some water in front of him and he drank it right up and started wagging his tail, but just couldnt move his legs much at all. I drove him to the vet with my sis and the vet said he had something wrong with him(forget what exactly) and it was going to be best to put him down.

I called my parents to let them know what was happening and they were both crying, since they weren't there to say goodbye. I held the phone up to our dog and put it on speaker so he could hear my parents say goodbye. His tail started wagging when he heard their voices.

Fuck, that the saddest shit I have ever seen in my life.

:(

Fuck, I have to give a training in an hour and I am a total mess. I'm supposed to drive 14 hours tomorrow and she was going to be my driving buddy. I'm spending the next few months in California while my husband has to stay in Washington and she's supposed to be there to sleep on my bed and sit with me while I work and...

I just don't know what I'm going to do without her. :(

The first week is awful, your brain is in a fog like you've been stunned.
I really recommend taking time off work. Doubtful you can get bereavment leave(pet owners really should be able to though!), but take time off regardless. Its really tough, I hope you make it through alright. :'(

Sorry to hear that AC. My wife and I had to euthanize two dogs within the space of a year and it was really, really tough.

My condolences.

I lost my dog years ago and never wanted another. However my brother ended up getting one and when he moved it stayed at my dads, I came over often to help take care of it, needless to say I changed my mind about wanting another...

I think with the number of dogs out there and your apparent love for dogs you should go adopt one that tugs on your heart at the HS.

I don't want to be that typical callus person that just tells you to run out and get a new dog, because it pissed me off when people told me that. On the other hand they were right, and it feels good to know you're taking in a nice dog and giving it a better home!

Thanks for all the condolences, guys. I know we will get another dog (probably dogs plural, since we lost our other Dane in May and I like having two to keep each other company) but gotta wait for the right time. We're building a house right now, and I'm renting at a place that has two other dogs living there, so while having my faithful girl with me worked out fine, bringing a totally new dog into the mix might not. I wish I didn't have to wait but I think we'll provide a better life once were moved into our new place with property and all.

Live in our dreams, and we'll have Faith

Had I God's wrath to smite and kill my foe
I'd let him be, and take his dog instead
And show no mercy, aiming with a blow
To pierce the heart and tear it shred to shred
Alas, poor heart, no hell has deeper pits
When outstretched hand finds not a friendly head
When zoomies in the field in jumps and fits
Are fantoms in the fog and words unsaid
God rest your soul, dear pup, sleep well tonight
Some pieces of my heart have died with you,
And how I suffer, and how long the plight
And how much more when all the world's askew?
Live in my memories forever, dear friend,
My love persists, and so do you, until the end.

Nothing like losing a pet. :'( I've lost family and haven't had a heartache more than when a pet of mines died.

But - there is also nothing better like giving a new one a good life either. :) Go get a new dog and post pics.

Pics from April, when we still had both our dogs. I wish Danes lived longer. Both of these girls made it to 10.

Beautiful dog! Take comfort in knowing you gave your friend a loving home. Every pet should be so lucky.
