All -

I do not sleep well on my current bed and I have not for years. I have a minor back pain (which I believe is a result of the bed possibly being too soft) and I am thinking about finally getting a new bed. There was an article in the WSJ that got me thinking about these two brands of beds and I thought I would see what the feedback was from everyone on these.

Did you have poor sleep on an old mattress but now sleep better now that you have switched to one of these?

Interested to see if they live up to the hype/cost.

I have tried both mattresses. I do not like the sleep number at all. The idea itself is very gimmicky (imo) and it's just not very comfortable no matter how soft or hard you set it. The ability to set to distinct zones so that each side of the bed suits the sleeper is also poor - there's a divot between the two zones.

Tempurpedic is very nice. It's extremely comfortable. I too like a firm mattress and find that the tempurpedic was phenomenal. However, it is extremely expensive and I've read that many users have problems with the material after a few years. I can't recall exactly what the problem was, but I think it had something to do with the material lumping.

I recommend checking out this deal at fatwallet: http://www.fatwallet.com/forum...t_key=y&keyword1=hotel

I purchased one over a year ago and it is fantastic (W bed with featherbed).

I use a pad made out of a tempurpedic-like material on top of my normal mattress, and it works great.

Combine the two. Get the cheapest possible Select Comfort bed. Then add memory foam to the top. When the memory foam dies (and it WILL), just replace it. The cheap Select Comfort bed will never wear out. Thats the beauty.

When you buy the more expensive Select Comfort beds, you're just buying foam...which wears out.

I have a Pillowtop and recently slept on a Sleep Number. My wife really liked the Sleep Number but I preferred our Pillowtop. I've only tried Termper-Pedics in the store but I like them a lot since you can toss and turn and not wake up your S.O.

I have. The SN bed was pure, expensive crap. It's just a fancy air mattress with a quiet motor. I could never get it hard enough for my comfort.

The TP beds, though expensive, are fantastic. Almost bought one a year ago and may still do so.
