Sleep mode knocks PCs off network switch

I just installed a gigabit switch from D-Link(DGS-2205) and when I woke up my file server from sleep mode, I could not access it from the main PC. I had to restart the file server in order for the two PCs to connect. Is this normal or is there some setting I have to change. When the two PCs were connected to just the router, this did not happen so I know its the switch. Thanks.

It is very strange that a switch would cause such troble.

By now you should know that Network is Not Magic, it is (just to make sure) a form of technology, when something does not work info is needed to try to figure out why.

The term I can not access the computer is meaningless without additional info.

If the computer IP is 169.*.*.*
It means that the computer lost its IP and can not conncet to the Router to get an IP.

If the computer has a valid IP it might be another problem.

In any case (regardless of the switch story) I would, assign to a File Server a Static IP, or a Static DHCP IP (if the Router support it).

In addition uncheck the power saving of the File server's NIC and take out of the standby loop any Network related setting.
 
Don't let your server sleep. You are playing havoc with browsing by doing so.

Also, access machines with \\ipaddress and do not rely on network browsing.
