Prepare to be confused.

'deep breath'

Okay, so we've heard Infinity Ward is likely cranking on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Despite the mass exodus the studio suffered after the Vince Zampella/Jason West fiasco, Activision apparently restaffed IW in record time.

Then there was the rumor that Sledgehammer Games, a designer owned by Activision, was working on another Call of Duty installment. It was initially purported to be an action/adventure game but was later emended to hold the more expected first-person shooter label.

Finally, there was the rumor that Raven (Wolfenstein, Singularity) was working on something CoD-related. Now, we've got what is supposed to be a clarification from the LA Times.

It seems both Sledgehammer and Raven are assisting Infinity Ward in development of Modern Warfare 3. However, Sledgehammer is indeed working on their own CoD spin-off, which is supposed to sport a sci-fi theme of some kind.

Sledgehammer appears to be working with IW on the single-player mode of MW3 while Raven is handling development of the multiplayer aspect. There. Does that clear everything up?

Man, this is going to be such a clusterfuck. Either too many chefs in the kitchen are going to make a mess, or either they have standing orders to not break what doesnt need fixing, and it will be a total boring rehash. CoD has been a rather unusual series where the level of quality stayed relatively high through yearly installments over seven years now, but that cant last forever.

meh, cod is on the decline. it peaked with COD4: MW

im kind of over the whole FPS genre in general for the time being unless something really new and different can come along. all the more recent ones are doing is adding more and more features making the games easier and less balanced.

when i compete against other people, i want the best people to win, not the people who have the better luck of hte draw to win.

Perhaps to you, but the masses say otherwise.

Agreed.

MW3 sounds like it's going to be jacked, though. Raven? I didn't even know they were still together. The last meaningful title they released was Soldier of Fortune 2. Then they resigned themselves to being id's bitch.

they should change it to first person action movie

if they do a MW4, I expect to only need to click the mouse buttons to do stuff like make the in game charactor walk, everything else should be taken care of for us by then :p

this project sounds like a worse nightmare than Medal of Honor.

Adding more people to a project will neither get you a better final product nor one that is finished faster.

Not even the "masses", sort the AT console gaming forum by thread views and the MW2 and CoD BO threads are both first and second place.

I think Activision's biggest threat to the CoD series is that eventually they will be competing against Respawn's game.

As much as I loved CoD4, I find Blops to be a better game. I don't know about the single player (I haven't played the single player of a CoD game since CoD2) but the multiplayer is much more refined and better. Sure, it isn't perfect, but it is better. The only real complaint I have (and this went for all CoD games I have played) is the map design and layout are usually subpar to what I believe a competitive FPS should be.

This sounds more like a PC gamer bitching about console gaming more than a console gamer bitching about console gaming. I also fail to see where this is coming from...

The single player campaigns of the CoD series has maintained a similar level of difficulty over the past few installments with the only major change being that IW did away with the infinite respawn of NPCs, and turned it more into a "clear the area/move on" game instead of "work your way to the invisible button that stops the current spawn point and activates another" game. It's not easier, just more realistic and much less annoying to most people. MW felt like a carnival fun house at times because of the infinite respawn, whereas MW2 and BO actually give you a sense of forward motion.

The multi-player continues to get refined and more balanced. The difficulty of multi-player really depends more on how good you are in relation to your opponents and/or team mates.

Also, Treyarch has actually added more challenge to obtaining the Pro perks in BO over MW2. MW2 basically just required you to use a perk a lot, and you got the pro version. BO requires you to preform specific tasks with the perk to unlock Pro, some of which are not exactly trivial. Granted, I don't think the goal is really to make it significantly more difficult, but to force players to try new tactics or game modes that are outside of their normal comfort zone. Either way, it presents an additional challenge for players that wasn't there before, and it's not really a casual gamer friendly decision to make on Treyarch's part.

We'll have to see how this project turns out. On one hand it sounds like it cluster%$*&, but on the other you also have to consider that this is a really huge opportunity for these developers to get in to a title as bigas CoD. I'd expect these guys to bust their asses to make this game as good as they possibly can.

the cod games have to much stupid crap thats not actually 'playing the game' anymore.

single player wise

I am not a huge fan of the theatrics with perks ETC they had added to MP, but it doesnt really bother me much. I wish CORE gameplay was more important, but it seems that flashy is king

Good luck trying to sell the idea of a single player game with no cinematics or a multi player game with no rewards system to either publishers or consumers. It's 2011, not 1998. These things are expected and demanded for a AAA game these days.

The core gameplay is what keeps me and everyone else coming back year after year. There's no better fast-paced FPS out there right now.

I dont mind cinematics

but I dont want to hold the move forward button for 5 minutes and have them tell me it was a level :awe:

my least favorite thing about halo is the rewards that actually do stuff...

bad company has very limited 'perks' and I prefer it that way, the massive unbalanced unlocks leave me little reason to get into the game, as I dont have 50 hours a week to pour in just to stay competitive.

If you *need* unlocks to keep playing, then its not the gameplay that has you hooked :colbert:

I'm done with CoD. CoD3 was fun, 4 was the best shooter ever made, 5 was ok, 6 had a lot of promise with no follow through.

I'm tired of paying yearly for a beta, though.

Hope you don't like fighting games then... Capcom has been doing that for decades.

I think that Raven's last great game was JKII: Jedi Outcast. The SoF games were great as well. But seriously, I wouldn't doubt if this game hit a roadblock by either creative differences or someone notices how weak the Activision owned studios really are. When was the last time a game NEEDED 3 developers for a game? Even if the new ones sell, it's because it's the same people that fall for the Madden syndrome. They HAVE to buy the next years game even though the game play and how the majority of things work are pretty much the exact same. There may be different guns, maps, and perks (somewhat), but it's practically the same game. COD4 I think we the peak of the COD franchise, by the way.

Quoted so that we can revisit this when you buy the next COD title.
