slave hdd keeps turning off...

ok, i'm running win2k, and the problem is with my slave drive. both master and slave are running at dma66. my problem is my secondary drive keeps turning off (which is a good thing). but the thing that bothers me is that whenever i want to start a program or go to some web site and the secondary drive is 'off', win2k takes time to 'turn it on' then loads the program/web page, even though i'm NOT using the secondary drive. is there a way to have windows just 'turn on the drive' when it needs it so that things will run faster?

if this doesn't make sense i'll try to clear things up more...

Thanks.

Are you sure there's no Page File (Virtual Memory) on the 2nd drive that it would need to spin up and use it. Try disabling the Page Files for the 2ns drive if your sure you have enough memory and set the PF on your master (main) drive.

Hope thats helps!

hmm...i've just checked Perfomance Options > virtual memory under System Properties and it looks as if everything is being handled on my C drive.

thanks for your help.

Unless there is a 3rd party solution, i think you might be stuck with this issue. I am pretty sure that Windows does not have a setting to selectively shut down and start drives (if I were to guess, I'd say both your HDs are spinning down, not just the one). As this is a power saving feature, I think it's "all or nothing" Windows will power down all your drives when the PC is not used, and will power them all back up when the PC is used. This is likely more efficient, as Windows has no way of knowing if you are or are not going to write something to the secondary HD at any given time, so always will spin it up.

Many programs (such as Windows' own My Computer/Explorer) will scan all drives in your system when they are opened, causing a drive at rest to be spun back up.

Anytime you bring up a Open/Save dialog the drive may be scanned as well, and therefore require it to be spun back up.

There is no way to change this behavoir.
