Slave Drive crashes

I have a WD 10 Gig HD as a slave and it has a large collection of MP#'s. Whenever I access it the system crashes - also when I call up the contents such as through browsing my music library - that will crash the system as well. Any suggestions on why this is happening or if it can be fixed? Thanks, tom
