Slackware DHCP stuff messing up gaim?

Booty

Senior member
Like the summary says, I recently switched to DSL... had some problems getting my damn actiontec modem to save settings, but when it finally did everything seemed fine. My Slackware box didn't seem to want to release its old IP for some reason, but it eventually did. I honestly don't remember what order what happened, but I know at some point gaim wasn't working... wouldn't connect. I updated to .78, still nothing. I think I ended up rebooting and all was well again, but I can't remember for sure... all I know is it was working again, and now it's not again.

I then installed it on my Windows machine, and it connects fine over there, so I'm pretty sure the DSL modem isn't blocking anything. I thought maybe I fudged something up with my DHCP settings in Slackware, since I definately don't know linux inside/out. Can someone give me a little push in the right direction to ensure that all that is setup how it should be so that I can determine if it's what's causing my gaim problems or not?

And, speaking of gaim, anyone know how to enable the spell-check feature without re-compiling? I always just grab the packages off of Slackware's site (I guess I should probably look into swaret, but haven't had the time yet), and it must not be enabled by default in those packages. The version that came with the new dropline (.76?) had it enabled... didn't know about it before then. Updated to .77 and it was gone. Anyway, not as big of an issue... but if anyone knows the answer, good deal.

well according to this

Slackware uses a netconfig utility, but if that doesn't work you can edit the init file your self. It's rc.inet1.

That's one of the nice things about slackware, other distros make this stuff stupid difficult sometimes.

If you have a question about what a command does, consult the man file for it.

Doh, I knew about netconfig... just forgot. Yeah, I was poking around in the files manually when the problems first started showing up, so I'll let netconfig do its thing and make sure all is well. It's kinda weird, because everything else that reliease on the internet (web browser, drivel, etc) all work just fine... so maybe it's a gaim issue. Guess I'll find out tonight after work. Thanks drag. 🙂

An update, if anyone cares...

I think it's related to the actiontec DSL modem... that's when things started acting funny, IIRC. What's weird is, if I start gaim on the linux machine, the AIM and ICQ connections just kinda sit there... unable to connect. If I start it on my Windows box (same accounts), they connect fine. If I then turn and start it on my linux box *without first disconnecting under windows*, linux is able to connect fine and then, of course, boots the windows clients.

I have no idea what it's doing this... maybe some day I'll find out. I'm not all that impressed with the actiontec modem... if I change the config it rarely sticks, and instead goes back to default settings, making me configure the whole thing over again. I'm scared to try a firmware upgrade, for fear it might knock the thing out all together (happened to a friend's, hence my hesitation). Maybe I should look for a different DSL modem...
