Anyone hear of this new player?
www.slacker.com
Right now it seems like a light copy off of Last.fm + more music but - the community. The thing is that they plan to release a cool looking player that you can buy.
The player will be able to play mp3 and other formats, and video. Along with the things you load on yourself it will be able to play the radio like on the website or something like it through wifi and when its not connected through wifi it will get its signal from a satellite. So its kind of like a mp3/video/satellite radio player. Apparently it will also be constantly downloading songs on the player from the radio station you select so that even if you get disconnected for a period of time you wont seem like it cause the next song is already downloaded. Sounds like it would take a lot of bandwidth and space.
It seems like an awesome unit to me and it looks really slick. The kicker is that its going to be FREE with no on air ads. All the ads will be through pictures and video on the unit or on the web browser. You can get rid of the ads by paying a subscription of like 7 bucks.
It would be interesting to see their business model but I hope it takes off.
