SL 32 bit vs 64 bit.

I read a few articles and came to the realization that my SL's booting with the 32 bit kernel. I followed the instructions and pressed 6-4 right before the apple loading screen came out and it's still in 32 bit more. I checked and my EFI supports 64 bit. Any ways, will I see much difference? I don't want to modify my .plist to have it always start in 64 bit mode as I'm afraid some of my kexts won't work. Why isn't the 6+4 key during boot doing anything for me? I even tried rebooting and holding them down until I was at the desktop, still 32 bit.

Cause your on a hack lol. 64bit has some stuff that wont work. Like ntfs 3g. Really there is no reason to boot into 64bit. Some Apps are running as 64bit anyways. Like finder, take a look at activity monitor.

I really dont know any reasons to run 64bit on a mac right now... others prob know more of why you would want too.

Where does he say he is on a Hack?

However, OP, KeypoX is right on one point, so long as the apps are 64bit you are more or less ok. Also, how much RAM do you have anyway? If the app is 64bit then it can have more than 4GB RAM, the kernel really shouldn't need it. At least not now, not this year.

Ah fair enough. Should have listened to my 2nd grade teacher and used CONTEXT CLUES (cue the music for Context Clues Man to enter stage right)

Yeah my box is a hackintosh. I havd 4 gigs of memory but did not know applications could take advantage of all of it in 32 bit mode. I suppose I'll leave well enough alone, I was thinking I could get some more performance out of it. But it sounds like it won't make much difference, and might cause problems with my drivers to boot.

If you look at your Activity Monitor it will tell you with Apps are running in 64bit mode. The Kind column will be 'Intel (64bit)'. All other 32bit apps will just be labeled 'Intel'.

I've had my MBP forced to 64bit for a while and really there's no reason for it
