I wouldn't go with steam. I'd download all of the mods via Nexus.

There are a few inventory management mods out there. SkyUI5 does inventory pretty well. Good Luck.

I would avoid the SE version if you can as a lot of mods don't support it still.

Unless you don't mind that and want the upgraded graphics.

Most of the worthwhile mods have been ported over. And many were rendered obsolete.
SkyUI is the most helpful and there is now an SE version, so you really should make the leap at this point.

Disagree.

True, the better mods are with the vanilla version. It's been out much longer and has the support of the mod community. But, mods from the original are being imported to the SE version everyday. The main thing I love about the SE version is the stability. I was running over 100 mods with SE and no issues. I can't say the same with the original. I was getting crashes often. The game would freeze up on me often. The main issue with SE though is SKSE64, and SkyUI. There are a few games like frostfall that still need to be updated. It can run with the current version of SKSE64 and SkyUI, but some of the features are still missing. It's going to be addressed soon.

I haven't been able to get SkyUI installed. I got the Script Extender SE installed (which oddly requires the original Skyrim to be installed as well), then I read a manual install guide for SkyUI (as I read it, extract it into the Mods folder, I tried both as a subfolder of Mods and into Mods directly), but the mod doesn't even get acknowledged as installed let alone do anything.

I kinda wish I had gone with the original Skyrim because I can't say I'm sold on how worthwhile the SE version is. I find it odd how some lesser characters look like they have pasty/bad make-up on, or say the cobblestones have pasty outlines rather than looking like cobblestones, and for all that I'm obviously roasting my graphics card for nothing good.

The SE version is vastly superior in every measurable way, aside from raw mod count (irrelevant considering the mods available). I recommend you stop trying to install manually and use Nexus Mod Manager (nmm) from here on out. 99% of mods can be installed via that with a single click, and you have to do very little aside from ordering them with BOSS (which you need to do anyhow).

Hmm, that nexusmods site gave me the strong impression that any level of access was to be paid for. I just had another look and realised that it shows tick boxes for the premium options but doesn't give an explicit "free" option (which is what gave me my original impression).

Thanks for the recommendation.

Well, after blowing away SKSE and my attempted installs of SkyUI5, I went with NMM, still got the issue of SkyUI5 saying that SKSE wasn't installed (despite the fact that it was installed through Steam in the first place), various attempts to install SKSE the way it's aparently supposed to be done yet SkyUI still couldn't detect its installation, then after feeding SKSE as a downloaded file to NMM (latest version I believe, 7z format), I got that to install, then SkyUI5 finally installed, then the game immediately crashed and only started working again once SkyUI5 was deactivated, then I installed 5.1 because 5.2 is marked as an open alpha (yet for some reason nexusmods comes straight up with that version as if it's the stable version), (I removed 5.2 before installing 5.1) but then 5.1 is also marked as alpha status, the game started, but still no new UI.

A smidgen frustrated.

I'm concerned you're now doing more harm than good. I recommend blasting your Skyrim installation (and delete whatever directory structure is leftover once Steam is done), redownload, install SKSE and SkyUI via NMM. Start Skyrim SE.

This. ...I also thought that SKSE was unnecessary/redundant for Skyrim SE, because it exists only to allow for 64bit scripts, right? (many of the mods designed for vanilla Skyrim) Should't updated/new mods for SE work without SKSE?

I thought they were working on a script extender for Skyrim SE as of a few months ago, and work on a true SkyUI for SE required it. The gimped SkyUI 2.2 or whatever worked prior to, but it sounds like they got SKSE and SkyrimSE SkyUI off the ground since then, given his posts.

I definitely remember the SkyUI team saying they were deferring all development of a new UI until SKSE was ported/rebuilt for the new engine, at minimum.
