skypeout will only let you call landline and cell phones in US & canada unlimited. I have this and theres a slight lag but all in all its good. To receive calls from a traditional phone you need to have skypein? not sure about the name. You get a valid US or canadian phone number if you subscribe to it.

You also need skype-in to rent a phone number and be able to receive incoming phone calls. Iirc its about $40 a quarter.

so.. i need skypein and skypeout to make & receive calls here in the US? do they have a package that includes both at a lesser rate than separately?

any other cheap VOIP providers? I used to have packet 8 and it was 20/month - i wasn't too happy with them, though.

I got Skype-in last year around Nov-Dec. and it was 40.00 for a Skype-in number for a year, and then you can just buy Skype credits. I havn't used ten dollars worth of credits all year. I won't spend more than 50.00 for my phone bill this year. As for Skype-out,(i downloaded Skype-out a couple of years ago and then got Skype-in) that is free i'm sure and probably in the software when you get a Skype-in acct.#. For me it is great because i make so few calls a month, 4-5 on average, that i couldn't justify paying 27.00 a month for local service only.

Yep and nope.

Another VOIP alternative is ViaTalk which usually runs $199 for 2 years specials, that's for unlimited incoming and outgoing calls.

$199 / 24 months = $8.30 not sure how much the taxes/fees/surcharges are.

I use SkypeOut and [/b]SkpeIn[/b] and love it.
