Skype problem on my home theatre/server PC

This is the first time I've seriously used Skype on it, otherwise I think I installed it some time ago and did a basic echo sound test on it without any problems, but this is really weird:

Today, to begin with, when I fired up Skype on it I would get all the usual startup Skype type sounds, then if I clicked on a call with the standard echo sound test service I would get a couple of Skype noises to indicate the start of the call, then all sound would cease within about a second: No ringing sounds, no 'welcome to Skype core testing service', etc.

I then found that Skype inexplicably had the wrong sound output device set (though how on earth it made any noises at all is something I still wonder), so I set it from (I think) onboard sound SPDIF to HDMI (ie. the TV). The sound test then worked.

My wife then fired up a call with her sister. All OK for about ten minutes, then the sound went off. Then the sound was off again on the Skype test. Restarting Skype fixed it, until another ten minutes went by and the sound went off again. Since then I haven't managed to get the sound back on again on Skype on the server (otherwise sound is fine on that machine).

I tried unplugging HDMI and just using VGA + onboard realtek audio, double-checked the Skype audio settings, updated the realtek driver, nothing.

There is also a problem at the sister's end whereby they get a message saying there's a problem with their soundcard, but has anyone seen that then affect Skype for the person at the other end? How or why would a Skype problem at one end cause the same problem at the other? I don't think this is a logical scenario, but sometimes life is more complicated than rationalisation 🙂

I think the problem with the sound cutting out after a while is at their end, but Skype acting wonky at this end has got to be a problem purely at this end. I'm basically out of ideas though.

Using Skype on my wife's Win10 PC is working better than it was on the server, but the sound cutting out from their end with the message they're receiving about the soundcard is still a problem. I've advised that they update their sound driver, but we're waiting on someone getting home before they're happy to do that.

I think the ideal start here would be to get a Sype conversation going with another party. Then you would at least know if you need to be looking on your end or their end for the problem.

I used Skype almost every day (IM client for Business), but have only used the regular client fall calling a handful of times, and did not run into issues with any of them.
