Skylake vs i7-3770k

My old laptop is broken and so I'm in the market for a new laptop. How does intel's new Skylake compare to my desktop Core i7-3770? If i get Skylake, will it be able to replace my desktop? I use a lot of adobe premiere.

Wait. Seems you are mixing apples and oranges. What cpu was in your old laptop? I guess you want a new laptop that is as fast as the 3770k desktop processor?

You definitely need an i7 quad core 45 watt laptop chip to come close to a full on desktop i7. Even then, the desktop chip will be faster because it has better cooling and a higher TDP to work with. Intel has improved performance per watt since Ivy Bridge, but not so much that a 45watt laptop chip can match a desktop. Availability of Skylake is still very spotty in laptops, and I dont know if quad i7 skylake models are available yet.

Edit: Looking at passmark scores, the 3770k scores about 9600, while a haswell i7-4720hq scores 8150. So it is about 15% slower, which is closer than I thought. But I dont know if the laptop chip could sustain this performance indefinitely because of thermal limitations. I dont think Skylake quad cores are out yet, but possibly a higher end skylake mobile quad in a package with very good cooling could come close to the 3770k in cpu performance.

Thanks. I was getting confused because Intel calls them both i7 in laptops and desktops. Yes, I do need a laptop for travel. I was just wondering if the new mobile processors were faster than what I have in my desktop. Apparently not. I read in another forum that the last letter will help me tell the difference.

For laptop you'd want the i7 4720HQ, for desktop may as well go Skylake with a pair of DDR4 3200+.

The new Skylake i7 6700HQ 45w mobile CPU is pretty much right up there with a 3770k. Of course cooling will be a big factor in sustained performance for a mobile part. Do not buy any i7 4xxx series since Skylake is out. The new XPS 15 looks very promising and features the new 6700HQ. It is 8 days from release.

Skylake is able to do more with less power compared to Haswell and Ivy. Have a look at this.

What this shows is the percentage of clockspeed needed to do a particular workload.

I'm not too familiar with adobe premiere but being a video editing tool, I would imagine that it is quite multi threaded and so multicore benchmarks would be particularly relevant but both CPUs are 4 core and 8 thread and they are similar in performance across the board for both single and multi core benchmarks. Assuming the mobile Skylake CPU has adequate cooling, it looks like it should perform about the same as the 3770k.

You can click the checkmark next to each CPU you want to compare and then the benchmarks you want at the top and hit restrict to see only the CPUs you want.

I am actually in the market for a similar system so I have pre-ordered the new Dell XPS 15 that Anandtech discussed here:

It should be a very impressive system, a 15.6 inch display with almost no bezels (making the system very compact), 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe SSD, a 100% adobe RGB gamut 4K display, GTX 960M, machined aluminum and carbon fiber construction, total weight of 4.4 lbs and of course the new Skylake i7 6700HQ. Dell is also said to have worked closely with Microsoft to really improve the user experience, particularly with the trackpad. I have seen one initial review compare the trackpad to the Macbook Pro, which is of course quite promising. I'm still eager to see the first in depth reviews of this device, if there is anything too negative I will of course cancel my pre-order but I'm expecting things to be quite positive given that the little brother of this laptop, the XPS 13 has done very well this year.

I'm seriously considering the Dell XPS Infinity. How does the CPU in the XPS infinity compare to the 3770k? I'm assuming that they are on par with each other? I tried to search the bench marks on anandtech but could not find the same CPU. The XPS infinity has an i7 6700HQ at 3.5hz with 6mb of cache. The 3770k has 8mb of cache at 3.9hz but can only utilize ddr3.

you only mentioned maximum turbo clocks (1t load), 3770K will probably run at 3.7GHz under full load, the other CPU I'm not sure, but considering the 2.6GHz base clock, around 3Ghz under load? so yes, I guess the 3770K is a little faster but not much.

Better off with the i7-6820HK which for the same price has more cache and higher clocks than the 6700HQ.

The i7-6700HQ runs 3.1GHz max at 100MHz bclk on 4 cores which is lower than even the much older Haswell i7-4700?Q. The i7-6820HK could get you to 4 cores at 4GHz in a decent machine for most real world apps. YMMV
