A professional overclocker has set a new record for Intel Core i7-6700K microprocessor frequency. This time the new code-named “Skylake” processor hit nearly 7GHz, which is among the highest frequencies ever achieved by any Intel Core i-series microprocessors.

Chi-Kui Lam, a professional overclocker from Hong Kong-based HKEPC web-site, has managed to overclock an engineering sample of the Intel Core i7-6700K “Skylake-S” microprocessor to 6998.88MHz, or by whopping 74.97 per cent compared to its stock frequency. To hit nearly 7GHz, the overclocker had to disable three cores out of four and the Hyper-Threading technology. Voltage of the processor was increased from 1.2V to 1.888V.

Too low.compared to AMD or the old Celeron who got up to 8Ghz (for world récords only)

Title says "hit 7GHz"

Looks inside thread, all I read is "hit nearly 7GHz"

Clickbait much?

i'm more impressed by the average clocks these get on air, thank you. 5ghz with barely over base voltage.

These overclocks are so utterly pointless.

What a waste of time and resources.

There is that nearly thing.

And custom cooled on liquid nitrogen probably for a short test I imagine, of course.

But can it break 3000 on the CPU-Z ST score? Hell I wonder if it can even complete a benchmark at 7GHz.

well then you tell me. six reviews out of six on 4.8~5Ghz with 1.30 on youtube. did they all get cherry picked samples?

Never did find LN2 OCs impressive and never will.

Give us a CPU that isn't crippled to hell and back that can get a ~50% OC with a $30 cooler and without using an expensive mobo then maybe you will get my attention.

To beat 3000 Bench Skylake would need to have 12% higher IPC than Haswell, but it's more like 9% in this particular test. Based on Skylake benches posted score would be 2903@7.0.

In terms of raw clockspeed, nothing trumps Vishera. In terms of raw performance, Toppc's 6.8 GHz OC (all cores + HT) on a 6700k would blow away the 8.722 GHz 8370.

"the overclocker had to disable three cores out of four and the Hyper-Threading technology. Voltage of the processor was increased from 1.2V to 1.888V."

congrats to him, it takes a lot of effort to get there, but, for the rest of us this is as relevant as the Celeron at 7GHz 10 years ago.
