My girlfriend wants me to come skydiving with her this summer. I would really love to go with her as neither of us has ever done it before. I say I am terrified of heights, but I think I'm just really scared of dying.

I get so scared thinking that my parachute wont open and the moment of realization that in a few seconds I will be dead.

How many people die from skydiving accidents? I get nervous even writing this...

Don't most people who die in accidents also have the backup chute?

Yes, and most who's primary fail use a backup to live.

Skydiving is overall very safe. Fatality is less than 1 in 50,000 jumps and maybe much better I can't quite remember.

Everyone who goes skydiving has backup chutes. So, yes, everyone involved in accidents are those who have backup chutes. Some places let you pack your own chute; others pack them for you. Look at the number of people who have accidents every year as opposed to the number of successful jumps. You'll be fine. :)

Oh, and it's not a few seconds that you realize that you're going to die if both of your chutes malfunction. It could be minutes.

Yeah, but not the first jump. Mine was 3000 feet, and most people are around there or certainly not more tan 5-8k (unless their school is nuts). You'll have enough time to realize you're going to die though!

I did an accelerated free fall jump by myself from 14000 feet with 2 instructors holding on to my legs and chest (they were not tethered to me). At 5000 feet, they let me go and I pulled my own chute and floated down by myself. Lots of fun.:)

I went skydiving with my wife and brother-in-law back in 2k1 at Boulder City, Nevada. Loved it. The tandem jump is advisable for the first time out and don't worry too much about getting killed... one way or another death is in your schedule... may as well enjoy yourself while you are here.

BTW, the odds are 1 in 80k (that was what the instructor told me right before we jumped that day.)
