A skydiver's legs were severed at the knees and he later died after he collided with an airplane over Volusia County, Fla.

A spokesperson for the Deland Police Department said the airplane was about 600 feet in the air Saturday morning when skydiver Albert "Guss" Wing III, of Longwood, collided with its left wing.

Both of Wing's legs were separated from his body at the knees, but he still managed to maneuver the parachute and land, police said.

The airplane landed safely and police investigators found damage to the plane's left wing.

The skydiver was treated by emergency personnel at the scene and was airlifted to Halifax Hospital, where he died. The Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office and the FAA have been notified.

The aircraft has been identified as a fixed-wing, propeller-driven DHC-6 Twin Otter.

Worst way to f'ing die ever.

That's some awesome training and mental focus to still land your parachute properly after such a horrific incident.

I wonder what the pilot was thinking.

He might not have known there were skydivers around. After all, it sounds like the guy was dropping at terminal speed.

I'm not saying he did. I was just wondering what the pilot was thinking when he managed to hit someone falling out of the sky.

Man...wow...I learned to fly at Cross Keys airport (17N) in NJ which has some heavy jump activity and I'm not sure how more folks don't get hit. They'd drift right off into the pattern sometimes.

nah, I'm sure he was in shock and probably didn't feel any pain, not for a while

You'd think they'd have zoned off areas for skydiving only or something.

You'd have to get there somehow 😉 I don't think the skydivers would like that anyway.

not if they collided at 600 feet

Heh, good point. Well he was falling at terminal velocity, but his terminal velocity was much lower due to the parachute. 😉 I've never flown a plane, so I wouldn't know how easy it is to see something coming at you from above at a moderate speed... I'd think they must have been travelling perpendicular to each other for the pilot to have not been able to see him. Not sure how the skydiver wasn't able to avoid the plane though....
