Sky in Quake 3 vs drivers

I am in the process of selecting a new Video card and have narrowed it down to the Asus V7100T, the Leadtek or VisionTek GeForce MX.

As I mostly play FPS games, I am concerned about the problem of the ugly sky in Quake 3.

Have the latest drivers remedied the problem? If not, is the problem present in the original GeForce 256?

Does anyone know which one of the above cards has the better 2D quality or are they all the same?

The problem is with s3tc no drivers will fix it and it's present in every GeForce video card ever made.

I'd just disable the texture compression all together. I did the hex code hack to the Quake 3 executlable that enabled DXT3 instead on DXT1 and it puts the texture compression on par with all other video boards that support it. I still find any form of DXT texture compression ugly though. I have a 64MB board, so I just leave it disabled.

Texture compression on Q3 looks just fine with the 6.49 and later Detonators if you add DWORD value "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\CLASS\DISPLAY\001\S3TCQuality=1" into registery.

I didn't know they added that option in the newer drivers. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Guys!!! Nice to know there is a way around the texture problem.

Does anyone have any experience with the Leadtek GeForce2 MX DH Pro card?

<< The point release 1.27 fixes the sky problem. Looks a heck of a lot better. >>

Actually, the 1.27 patch merely turns off texture compression by default, which will slow down the frame rate quite a lot. Turn texture compression back on (as it should be unless you have a 64meg card) and you'll see that the sky is still as nasty as ever :(
