Skt 754 with 2x512mb Memory

I have heard that running a 754 Sempron using 2 512mb memory sticks is slower than using 1 1gb or 1 512mb stick. What I don't understand is, if that is true, then why?

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I don't really know what I'm talking about so I'm not sure how to phrase this for a search.

Thanks.

doesnt make a difference, but there is no reason to have 2 sticks of ram in a S754 system because it cant run dual channel. which is the reason for doing that.

There is a problem with AMD's memory controller if you have 4 sticks. In that case you have your ram work with 2T command rate. However, as long as you have 3 or less sticks (with dual channel memory controller, s939, you would want 2, not 1 or 3), it should work at 1T. I have S754 A64 3000+ with 3x512 RAM at 200Mhz / 1T-2.5-3-3, so you should be ok with 2x512. But you should definitely go with 1GB stick, it will be easier to upgrade to 2GB later on 🙂

2x512 is undoubtably better than 1x512...

Anyways, if you've already bought your ram, then don't worry about it. If you are choosing components, just think if you're satisfied with 1gb total (save some $$ with 2x512) or if you want to later upgrade to 2gb (buy 1x1gb now).

2 x 512 is faster than 1 x 1024 or 1 x 512 with my rig. I use Super Pi 1.4 as benchmark. Same timing @ 2.5-3-3-6-1T. ECS NF3 250 and Sempron 3100 Paris core.

I bought a Biostar TForce 6100 754 and a Sempron 2800.

According to Biostars website, my board supports 2 x 184-pin DDR400 memory modules
Maximum 2GB system memory.

I was planning on reusing my Corsair VS 400 2x512mb ram from my other system. Will this be OK
