Illinois high school drop outs may soon have a new incentive to go back to school.
State leaders are hoping the threat of losing their driving privileges is enough to put teenage truants back in class.
Lawmakers are considering passing a law that would take away the driver's licenses of teenagers who either constantly skip class or completely drop out of high school.
But one local driving instructor dislikes the idea.
She says revoking driving privileges should only be based on driving.
"I don't think it would motivate the kids who drop out to stay in school.," Kristina Hestrom of Balda Driving School said. "For some. it would be a motivation but there is a large number of kids who have to drop out for other reasons besides that they just don't like school. They get pregnant, they have children. They have to get jobs because they have these children."
Under the bill, teens could get their licenses back after going back to school or earning a GED.
The bill passed through the House. It is awaiting Senate approval.
