Skip school, lose your license to drive

Illinois high school drop outs may soon have a new incentive to go back to school.

State leaders are hoping the threat of losing their driving privileges is enough to put teenage truants back in class.

Lawmakers are considering passing a law that would take away the driver's licenses of teenagers who either constantly skip class or completely drop out of high school.

But one local driving instructor dislikes the idea.

She says revoking driving privileges should only be based on driving.

"I don't think it would motivate the kids who drop out to stay in school.," Kristina Hestrom of Balda Driving School said. "For some. it would be a motivation but there is a large number of kids who have to drop out for other reasons besides that they just don't like school. They get pregnant, they have children. They have to get jobs because they have these children."

Under the bill, teens could get their licenses back after going back to school or earning a GED.

The bill passed through the House. It is awaiting Senate approval.

People who drop out of high school and have their suspended license aren't going to stop driving. Thats what makes them idiots, because they're DROPOUTS.

I thought in most states you didn't HAVE to go to school after you turn 16? And in most states you have to be 16 to drive. So... ... ...

They have a similar law here. If a student misses a certain number of days of school in the year, they lose their license. The only problem with it is that they are not required to be passing their classes. They can just show up, do nothing, fail, but still keep their license. Kind of a useless law really. Now if they required kids to have at least a D average to keep their license, that might make a difference.

That's why they want to do this drivers license thing, to keep kids in school until they graduate from high school. So... ... ...

Insurance companies are looking in your level of education when making a quote.

Maybe stereotyped, but the only people i know that dropped school and earned enough to have a car early in life either had wealthy parents or were in some really dirty job...

So they'll punish people for not going to school when they're not required by law to go to school? 😕 That's stupid.
