Ok, brief question for you all.

I am 5 foot 10 or so depending on the time you measure :) I weigh 160ish pounds and have the hardest time gaining weight. Here is what I normally eat during a weekday.

Breakfast - 1.5 pouches of oatmeal, the flavored crap *strawberries and cream* :p with a 20oz glass of water.

Lunch - Sausage/Egg mcmuffin with one burrito and medium soda. I eat breakfast food because the time I go to lunch is pretty early.

Supper - Four pieces of pizza and usually something else like salad or banana.

Toss in a 23gram protein bar each day, usually before I exercise but it can be in the morning or whatever. I take a one a day vitamin which helps with the exercise.

I refuse to eat candy so that makes it better I guess.

The question of the day is... what else can I do to gain weight? I guess I could eat better foods that are filled with vitamins and more protein but the lunch alone is around 35g + 23g from the bar and 20ish or so from supper.

My sister is taking medical classes and she stated that taking anything over 75+grams of protein a day is a hazard to the kidneys.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

gaining mass takes time for some, I had the same problem till I hit 25 years old. Weight lifters rule for gaining mass is 1gram protein per lb of body weight, BUT you MUST drink lots of water. Use a protein mix, w/e you can choke down...and hit the weights.

There's different ways to work the muscles. Working each muscle group once a week, and doing 2 months of mass lifting(ie low reps high weight), then switching to 2 months size/strength(ie higher reps, lower weights, and all focus on negatives: 2 seconds up, 4 seconds down) had the best effect. Using this you will build muscle for 2 months, then switch to toning/strengthening+establishing the muscle you put on.

Also, don't focus much on your actual body weight unless you going for competition, just focus on how you feel and keep measuring your muscle groups. Keep track of every little detail, which will keep you more focused on your goals.

Even the most dedicated body builders are lucky to gain 1lb/mnth in muscle.

all that being said, I stopped working out few years ago lol...

Most skinny guys who say they eat "a lot" actually eat very little when they calculate it out. Go to this website here:

Fitday

and enter in a typical day's diet to see exactly how much you have been eating. I know guys who need to eat 7k+ cals/day to gain weight. You may have a fast metabolism, but that is no excuse. Trust me, you CAN outeat it.

Once you have a rough figure for what you are eating in a day, estimate your maintenance calories here:

BMR calculator

Make sure to click on the link labeled "Daily caloric needs" to get your actual number of calories per day.

Now, once you have this number, eat that amount of calories every day for a week. Track your weight first thing each morning. If you have not gained a pound by the end of the week, then add 300 cals to your daily total and eat that much for the next week. Repeat this process until you are gaining ~1 lb./week.

I would advice you get 40% of your calories from protein, 40% from carbs, and 20% from healthy fats. Some people use other amounts but for a beginner it should work fine.

I trust you have a solid weightlifing program in place. Without a good routine, you will not gain the type of weight you would like.

Finally, check out the link in my sig. Read the stickies posted in the various forums, and feel free to register and ask questions. The members there are very helpful and knowledgable.

Good luck, and feel free to PM me with questions. I get tired of typing all of this out because it gets asked on AT at least once a week.

And eat better. Trying to gain weight isn't just about throwing as much fat and calories for your body to feed from as humanly possible.

Also, eat more meals per day.

Beyond that I don't know enough to give good advice. But I eat pork/lamb/beef/chicken, rice, pasta, veggies, hardboiled eggs, etc.. and other proper meals for dinner. Not "Four pieces of pizza and usually something else like salad or banana."

Ok, cool.

I was surprised, I only eat around 1600 calories a day. Give or take +200, I need to eat about 2k calories.

I favorited the site so I will look at it before asking any more questions :)

160 pounds isn't exactly skin and bones. Do you really think an earlier grave due to maintaining an unnatural body mass is a good trade off?

I was 130 pounds at 6 ft, and when my dad was in college he was 130 pounds at 6'2, so don't be thinking your all that skinny (skinniest guy I've known was 150 pounds and 6'9). I am currently 150 pounds at 6ft and yeah, a good part of the problem is food. I work out 3 times a week, but at school I am lucky to get calories. I usually lose 10 pounds in my first 2 weeks back from summer break since during the summer I eat non stop and during school i only get 2 meals a day. I can deffinitely confirm to you that working out while eating 2 meals a day is NOT a good way to gain weight because I've been working out for the last 3 month and havent gained a pound doing it :( (at least I can lift 50% more than before though).

Start a 2800 calories per day diet and post back.

Unless he starts using steroids, building muscle mass naturally isn't going to cause any problems.

Even the risks of steriods are vastly overstated by the media.

You may not necessarily notice it, but having higher body mass and caloric intake adds up in the long term.

Proof of this claim?

It takes time. How old are you?

Your not eating enough.

Make a big vat of pasta, sauce, beef and vegetables at the start of the week or every 2-3 days. Now eat portitions of it 2-3x a day in addition to your regular 3 meals. Eat more fruit and vegs also.

Eat more chicken, tuna, RICE, pasta, vegetables, fruit, drink more milk if you can stomach it, cottage cheese is a great alternative and lots of good proteins in also. Oily fish is also great like Mackeral :)

Ditch the protein bar. Get some protein shakes in also. Eat the above and have 2 shakes a day.

DO SQUATS also and DEADLIFTS. You'll put on good muscle.

It took me until 21 until I gained some muscle. I got a lot stronger and added a few kg's from 16-20 though. 21 onwards and I put on muscle a lot easier.
