make sure you go to the bathroom before you hit the slopes, and don't bother eatting breakfast, heh, if it's your first time, you're going to be eating lots of snow

Friends don't let friends ski in NC.
You guys are skiing down an ant hill or what ??

All kidding aside....hope you get some snow while you're there so there will be less pain on the buttocks.

I think we're going to Boone, NC or around there. Here's a link. I've never been skiing before and was kind of surprised that they even have skiing there :) We're all in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, so it's probably the closest place, too.

Few tips which you will probably hear at some time anyway:

- Get some socks that are made for skiing, otherwise your feet will get very cold.

- Make sure you ski boots are very snug, otherwise you're going to break an ankle ;)

- Get something to cover your head and ears if you want to keep your ears from falling off.

- Get some protection for your eyes because it can get BRIGHT, but don't take expensive sunglasses because they will just get broken.

- WEAR SUNSCREEN on your face and anything that is exposed. Trust me on this one. If you leave your ears uncovered make sure you get them too.

- If you take ski school they will teach you all about the wedge and how it will help you stop. Well, don't rely on it too much. The wedge alone will do little for you going down a steep slope. What you want to do is go down the slopes in a wide zig-zag pattern and keep your skis horizontal with the slope.

- Turning seems difficult at first, but it's actually very easy. First you should always look in the direction you want to turn because it actually helps you involuntarily move in that direction. If you want to turn left you should put weight on your RIGHT foot.

Most important thing: Have fun! Your first day you will likely be busting your ass quite a lot, but the only beginners who don't wipeout frequently are also the ones who rarely have any fun on the slopes. Stick with your friends (as long as they aren't going down blacks or something) so that they can help you and laugh at you. ;)

As long as you don't get frustrated when you fall you will have a BLAST.

Oh, and by the way I hate you. I had hoped to go skiing over Christmas break but the weather was lousy. I'm just extremely jealous. ;)

Have fun!

Edit: As for snowboarding... don't even attempt it unless you want to take a class. My friends may just be slow, but everyone I know who has tried to snowboard without going through a class had a horrible time.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm pretty excited :) Only 2 out of 6 know how to ski so it will be interesting! Keep the tips coming, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the sunscreen tip, Balt. I wouldn't have even thought about that!

Well we'll be there for 2 full days and 2 half days so maybe I'll try snowboarding once or twice. :) It's definitely something I want to try out.

By the way, anyone ever do tubing in a ski resort? Sounds and looks kind of goofy but maybe it's fun?

A lot of people forget that snow is white and will reflect the sun more than the sand at the beach. ;)
I wouldn't have thought of it myself if someone hadn't told me. Get some powerful sunscreen (or better yet, sunblock).

Oh, and you might want to get some blistex (spf 15 or above) for your lips too. Cold and sunlight might chap them pretty bad if you don't.

- Be sure to stretch thouroughly before starting, this will help to reduce the chances of sustaining an injury

- Be sure to check uphill before traversing a run

- Never stop for long in a spot where uphill skiers might have difficulty seeing you

A good tip that helped me stay up is keeping your shoulders square to the bottom of the mtn. If you rotate your shoulders too much you can loose balance easier. So when you're turning use your legs to turn. When turning right, put weight on your left leg and vice versa. Bend your knees and use your legs and waist to turn.

Get short ski's when learning. Do not go over 170's or so. I usually go skiing with 245's for speed and turning ability, 180's for mogals.

if you find yourself speeding downhill without possibility of stopping on skis, sit down and slow down...
PUTTING THE POLES INTO THE GROUND IN FRONT OF YOU WILL NOT STOP YOU!!!
it will most likely jam into your torso and cause excruciating pain.

seriously, my friend did this his first time skiing.
now he snowboards.

Thanks for the help all. I'm all packed and ready to go and hopefully I won't break anything or ram into a tree or moose or something :)

If you have to aim for the moose, they are softer than trees :)

245's huh? Like to strap trees to each of your feet?
