ski/snowboarding gear

I am trying out snowboarding for the first time on sunday, so I have to go out and buy some clothes for it. I am going to use my current jacket, since I don't have the money right now to drop on something nice in that regard.

but i need pants, gloves, socks, and the inner layers. should i get a good pair of sunglasses? goggles?

what do y'all use? what should i look at?

When I went skiing out at college once and didn't have any of my stuff with me, I just went out and bought an oversized pair of warmup pants at Goody's for like $10 and sprayed them down with scotch-guard. Kind of ghetto, but it'll keep you dry. I've never worn sunglasses or goggles for skiing. You can get inexpensive waterproof gloves at Walmart. Get a pair of thick winter socks too (probably Wal-mart too).

i'd like to get good stuff since i plan on doing this often ( i live in salt lake city ), i just dont want to blow the entire budget on a jacket.

i don't know much about clothing, but about snowboarding...

don't be discouraged, it's tough to learn at first (especially if you've never ridden a skateboard)

there are 2 or 3 difficult points in learning to board, but it's definitely worth it
good luck!

If you're absolutely sure you want to stick with snowboarding, then go ahead and get a pair of good snowboarding pants. I wouldn't spend more than $120-$150 on them. Yeah, they're expensive. Otherwise, something like mugsywwiii's suggestion would work. The first time I went snowboarding I wore jeans and then wind pants over that. Haha kind of funny but it worked!

Gloves, pretty much any will do as long as they keep your hands warm. I like mittens but gloves are fine too. If the place has a rope tow maybe get a pair of glove protectors, otherwise the rope may eat up your gloves. But rope tows are usually on the bunny hills and terrain parks.

Socks, I don't know. I wear regular socks and then a heavier pair over them. Maybe some that are nice and warm but are breathable. I'm sure they make ski/snowboard socks.

Inner layers is up to you depending on the temperature. I just wear whatever under my jacket and take off layers if I get too hot, which is what you want to be able to do.

Sunglasses or goggles are good. I suggest goggles but sunglasses would work I guess. It sucks going down the mountain and squinting your eyes cause you're going so fast or it's snowing out. Snowboarding without goggles or glasses when it's snowing out sucks ass. Get a pair of goggles with a tinted and no-fog lens. You don't have to pay a ton for the most l33t goggles either, at least I wouldn't. I have a cheap pair of Oakley ones which do what they're supposed to.

Feel free to ask any more questions. Hope that helped! 🙂

EDIT: Shabby's suggestion is a good idea. No use spending a bunch of money and then seeing that it's not for you! Although the above wouldn't cost that much, besides the pants, but I wouldn't get those unless I was SURE I was going to like snowboarding.

i wanted to mention that snowboarding socks are definitely worth it

they're just "thermal socks" or something, but they work extremely well
they're not too expensive and they keep your feet warm, and don't get your feet all wet from sweat and everything

First try out snowboarding and then worry about clothes. I was ready to buy the board/shoes/binding but decided to try it out first.
As soon as i got off the lift and fell i knew i was in for a rough day, after an hour my rear leg was killing me.
Im sticking to skiing 😀

IMO, the most important things when snowboarding are:

mittens/gloves
pants

that's it. Goggles are important too, but not as important as these two.

good mitts are needed so ur hands stay warm and dry. snowboarders touch the ground a lot, so u need good waterproof ones.

pants are key too. ur butt will be on the snow a lot, so you need good waterproof (and/or butt-padded) pants as well.

welp, i went out and bought a bunch of stuff today. I got some K2 jet stream pants, a set of hot chilly's base layers, some cheap $30 goggles, some $40 gloves, and a hat. This is an expensive sport for sure

Sessions makes really nice stuff. Make sure you buy mitts (not gloves). Your hands will stay alot warmer.
Hot Chilis for inner layers/socks
edit: Looks like you already bought your stuff!

hmm whenever someone tells me they will try snowboarding, I always tell them 2 things.

#1. Your BUTT will be black and blue on firstday.
#2. its worth it when you successfully make your first jump 🙂

I just recommand good snowboarding pants so you dont freeze your butt .

enjoy, I started sking when I was 10 or so, but once I learned how to snowboard, I never looked back.

this'll be the winter of my first jump 😀
i just got into the snowboarding thing last year

damn i can't wait to hit the slopes (i think)

i wonder if i can remember how to turn

Yeah it's expensive
What kind of board and bindings do you have?

You really should try to go out with someone who is experienced with snowboarding. They will show you the tips, techniques, and tactics to coming out not hurting so bad afterwards.

Some important things to remember. When you first start out most people try to slow down by over carving on their edge and falling over on their front or back. Remember, you are only slightly lifting your toe or heel so try that first. When you are experienced and can go faster, then you use greater toe and heel. But for beginners, I tell them to only slightly use their toes and heels and focus more on becoming better balanced on the board.

Learn the right way to fall. With your fists clenched fall forward into the grade. NEVER: fall with your palms open! I repeat: NEVER FALL WITH YOUR PALMS OPEN!! If you think you are going to fall, then get down low and fall.

Another tip to learn good slowing down and board control. I tell beginners to first learn how to go down forward. This means to face forward down the mountin with your board perpendicular to the direction of travel. Then try to stand up and slightly lifting your toes, try to do a smooth and controlled descent. It's heel edge if you are going down facing up hill.

Last tip is to ALWAYS stretch out before beginning. With that said, good luck and have fun!

I've gone boarding 3 times and I still don't have the hang of it. I'm not trying to discourage you, but its not easy! My brother is letting me use his board while he's in cali, so hopefully I'll get out there some this winter. Have fun!

i do not own a board/bindings yet. If I like it enough, i prolly wont get them until the spring since i'll be in alabama for the bulk of the season this year.

we are going to some 6 hour newbie lesson at park city. they're supposed to cover everything from picking out gear to riding the lift. I hope it isn't TOO basic.
