Ski glove question: security cord

NetWareHead

THAT guy
Im shopping for new ski gloves or mittens now and am a little dismayed at the lack of cords available on many of the gloves I'm considering. I consider this to be an essential feature and extremely good at preventing a dropped glove (e.g. while on the ski lift). For those who don't know what I mean, this is a loop of stretchable elastic cord attached to the glove that you insert your hands into, tighten around the wrist and then slide your glove on. End result is that remove your glove from your hand and still have them attached to your body. I've heard them referred to as idiot cords, dummy cords, security cords, glove leashes. I can't figure out why this is not a standard feature but it has saved me from disaster several times.

Some of the gloves I'm considering don't have this feature and I'm thinking I could either fabricate my own or purchases the cords separately and attach them myself. If all else fails, I will detach the cords from my old beat up gloves and sew them to the new gloves. Much thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Sewing on cords is gravy. That wouldn't even be a consideration if I were buying gloves. I'd get the gloves I liked, and if they didn't have cords, I'd add them.

So you are just looking for some bungee cord so you can DIY?

Yes and Yes. I'm googling bungee cord now, didn't know it was called that, but I'm assuming that whats is on my current set of beat up Burton gloves, some kind of stretchy cord.

If a set of ready made cords are available that I can clip or sew on, I'd like to use those. But I could manufacture a set if I had to...

get yourself to the winter section of any children's clothing store. they sell little straps with clamps on either end to secure kid's gloves to their jackets. my sister had them for her kids.

I still don't know how you drop gloves. Are you still in elementary school? Most if not all ski gloves have clasps that you can use to secure the 2 gloves together, use that and attach the gloves to your jacket?

I grew up in Lake Tahoe skiing at every chance.
Never heard of or seen them.

thats's weird, my ski gloves have exactly what the OP described. In shops here, most ski gloves have these elastic loops. I was pretty much convinced that you can not buy ski gloves without these things

When you are on the ski lift, it can happen very easily. You take off a glove or two to use your phone, smoke, adjust your gear, take a drink etc.... and next thing you know, you lost a glove. The clasps and jacket attachment you describe are a huge pain in the ass compared to glove leashes, plus my jacket doesn't have a clasp for that sort of thing. You can literally slide the gloves off your hands and forget about them, they are still attached to your wrists.

Stop picking your nose on the ski lift and you won't have any problem with losing your gloves.

I skied for years & can't recall ever seeing stray gloves on the ground under the ski lift; nor can I recall ever seeing the bungy cords you're describing.

Idiot mittens have been around forever. If your the sort who regularly drops/loses things, get them. I've noticed a fair number of youts who seem constitutionally unable to use pockets.

Every single time I've gone skiing I've seen these things.

I just asked my wife - there's a string thing that runs up one sleeve and down the other & clips onto the gloves. It should be easy to diy, but they sell them.

They're extremely nice to have. They add a lot of security when you take your gloves off on the lift to grab some food or whatever. I don't know why everyone's being an ass about this.

If you make your own you don't need stretchy cord, just regular cord. Make a loop that you put around your wrist and cinch it up with one of those button things that you on raincoat hoods or waistbands.

Outdoor Research puts these on all their gloves and I love it, but those gloves are more geared for mountain climbing where you take your gloves off more and don't have any place to set them.

ROFL! That's what I was thinking as well. Makes me wonder if the OP's mommy pinned his mittens to his jacket as well...😛
