Sketchy data service - Verizon/GSIII

Anybody know why internet is so inconsistent on my phone? It used to be where the WiFi hot spot would work very erratically, meaning perfectly well 98% of the time and do absolutely nothing the rest of the time, despite the phone browser working 100% flawlessly during that 2% downtime, but now even the browser away from home sometimes does absolutely nothing with full signal and unbroken 4G service with the up/down arrows indicating up and download action. The good news is I'm out of contract with Verizon, bad news is I signed up with them when they were the last to have true unlimited data, and now I have decided to take advantage of the $30 hotspot and I honestly don't know when I'm going to move again so I am not going to pay for installation of cable internet in a place I'm going to move out of soon. Is it likely a phone issue? Am I being throttled because I play LoL and eat data? BTW any and all net use on this phone was flawless until I started to use it as a hotspot. Currently using PDANet since it is more reliable than the stock hotspot app, but not 100% so.

No, their data service is certain areas have been cluttered with the sheer amount of people on their LTE network now. That Christmas buy one get one free RAZR didnt help.

I used to have 10-15 mb/s down at my house and now I can barely hold a 4G signal.

You can try to warranty your phone but that's pretty much it unless Verizon builds more towers. They don't throttle lines so that's not it.

Im actually looking to switch to T-Mobile because of this.

You are not being throttled -- Verizon isn't allowed to throttle LTE because of the spectrum they're using.

It's just pure overload. They can't bring their AWS system online soon enough. Unfortunately only super-recent phones like the S4 will be directly compatible with the new frequencies, but there may be a trickle-down easing of 700 band traffic.

So you guys are saying that Verizon is being penny wise and not keeping pace with their growing 4G customer base? Hmm. That sucks. Being I live in one of the 30 largest cities in the country, it would seem they are screwing over millions and millions of customers. Maybe it's time for a class action lawsuit. If anything their business model is piss poor if they cannot afford to keep pace, so we'd be doing the world a favor by accelerating economic Darwinism, and hopefully somebody other than AT&T can take over for them, and not constantly spam ads about how superior their data transmission is while making choices that reduce data transmission. lol.

What's so hilarious? The prospect of Verizon being owned in court again, or my exasperation? Either user AznAnarchy99 is correct and my post has some merit, or he is wrong and you should probably educate us as to how/why that is plz :p

My Verizon hotspot works great whenever I need it. I smile and say "Yeah!" whenever someone switches to T-Mobile. That will free up bandwidth in Verizon. :)

He is right but you were going all batshit crazy about it.

I still get a good 5-20megs in my area (depending on the signal strength)

See that's the problem. It works well enough to play Call of Duty on my PS3 with zero lag...but sometimes the network is bogged down to the point it takes about 15 minutes to get to a text-only forum, find a thread, and post in it. Also, whenever this happens, the loading bar on my mobile browser ALWAYS sits right at 10% for minutes at a time, then suddenly loads everything.

I ran into an AT&T cellphone tech last Fall....he was talking about how they're working on whatever the next network is that's coming out to replace 4G. I don't keep track with that stuff because if they don't have a network in place or sell the phones to use with the network yet, I'm not gonna worry about it. I wonder how much of that is vaporware anyhow that will be replaced by the next technology that comes out 6 months later. Deploying any frequency system like that has to be crazy expensive and a total guessing game on the part of the cellphone provider.

I have unlimited data and I sometimes think Verizon boots unlimited users on purpose.
It drops to 3G for no apparently reason, then I toggle airplane mode and immediately gets 4G 4 bars....WTF Verizon???

I use Razr M and roughly 8gb per month. I also use FoxFi when I travel.

That's good to know, at least I'm not the only one. I used to find rebooting the phone helped usually, but sometimes it does not help whatsoever. I think I will try the airplane mode toggle, I have not tried that yet IIRC.

I have unlimited still and I don't get booted. I use 10 gbs a month, sometimes more :p

No, I'm saying infrastructure takes a long time to build out and upgrade.
