I was going to buy an AX-7 w/ a Vantec 84cfm fan, which would have costed ~$45. My friend told me to buy an SK-6 ($18 at 2cooltek) and newegg has 100cfm 92mm Panaflo's for $8, he said it will cool alot better than the first combination. I am planning to run an XP1600 and overclock it. He said to just mount the fan on as a diamond and not a square and attach the clips to the sides instead of the corners. Seems good to me.. what do you guys think? Is it possible? Will I get better cooling?

Thanks!

I don't know if that trick will work with a 92mm fan. It works well with an 80mm, but the 92mm might be too large. Also, you have to remember that as you increase fan size, the center motor area of the fan also increases. With a 92mm fan, the motor might cover the entire surface of the heatsink and therefore the fan blades won't actually be blowing any air directly onto the heatsink. I say you just go with a nice 80mm.

Ok, so which will cool better, an Sk-6 or AX-7 with the same 80mm fan?

I believe the AX-7 is made to accomodate an 80mm fan while the SK-6 is made to work with a 60mm. Given a choice, I would go with the AX-7.

The SK6 also accomodates an 80mm fan it you rotate it as described in the original post. For the price and performance factor, it's hard to beat the SK6.

i believe they introduced the SLK-8000 which is basically an SK6 that is made for 80mm and cools better im not sure if it beats the AX-7 but im pretty sure the AX-7 will beat the SK6 cost aside regardless of the fan

Edit: if you are an overclocker than i would suggest a P4 1.6A unless you feel its unethical to support intel because choosing not to overclock is the only rational reason i would pick AMD over intel now

Yes, I understand that. I'm using an SK6 with an 80mm fan using the "rotation method". I was just trying to point out the fact that the AX7 was made with an 80mm fan in mind and will probably provide better cooling with that size fan.

Pay, the AX7 is the better heatsink, but it's also more expensive. It's up to you to decide whether you want to spend the extra money or not. It's also considerably larger than the SK6 so make sure it will fit on your motherboard without any problems if you decide to get it.

Yeah, I understand, thanks for the help.

I think I will be purchasing the AX-7...
