Size of past hard drives...

wHoA.. 40MBs?!? I suppose thats around the time of 386s huh? I remember my dads only had 20MBs. and i could run the coolest of games off a 3.5" floppy 😀

540 MB was the standard for about a year and a half, then all hell broke loose, and the Gigs just kept on coming.

My first was a 10 Meg belt drive actuated. 135ms seek!
My next was a 32 Meg. BLAZING fast with a 65ms seek.... I only paid $429 for it to! 😱
The next was a whopper at 65 Megs, 40ms seek for a super low price of $379!

Those were my '85-'90 drives. Then I started with the newer IDE drives (the 10 Meg was MFM and the other two were RLL). I picked up a WD Caviar 340 Meg and never looked back!

Early 90's... I had a IBM PS/1 286 with a 42MB HDD, actually I still have it. Also got a 10MB HDD in the garage from the late 80's I think.

In late 1994, the top of the line drive was 1.7GB in a desktop. The standard was about 1.2GB, if not smaller.

I remember having a 40MB drive in 1988 or so.

Yes i remember those Hard drives, they needed 2 conectors to get working. 🙂

I had a 20 meg one !!!! :Q

DOS 5.0 look out im coming !!!

anyone know where i could find info on the history of TAPE drives??? its like no one ever bothered to make a webpage about them... thanks!

My old Packard Bell came with a 130 MB drive back in '93. Then when Windows 95 came out. I upgraded to a WD 850 MB. Despite other people's experiences, I never had a problem with that machine.

The first company I worked for out of college (1989) had a Compaq 386s as a server. It had a 200MB harddrive running Netware 2.01a. I worked off of a Samsung 286-12mhz with a 40MB drive.

The company bought the 2nd Compaq SystemPro ('member those?) in town and paid over $13,000 for a 386-33 with probably 32-64MB of RAM and two 200MB IDE harddrives and we upgraded to Netware 2.10. 😀

The harddrive in my 1992 386 SX40Mhz was 127MB and I think that was mid-high in terms of size. I remember when my buddy got a computer 6months later and it was a WHOPPING 540MB!! I was SO jealous! NEITHER had CDROMS or Sound cards! PC SPEAKER BABY! LOL
