How large in hard drive space are the different linux flavors? Is it better to have multiple partitions (re- Slakware)? And is there a reason why sometimes things run smoothly and sometimes they don't

It really depends on you, and what you choose to install for your linix distribution... Take RedHat for example, there are tons of options you can choose to install or not, so there's a big difference in disk space between the bare minimum and the fully loaded installation...

Linux usually takes quite a bit of space because most distributions come with a whole bunch of extra software to use with it. I use Linux Mandrake 7.0, which takes 1.4GB with a full install and about 600MB for minimum. Windows is relatively slim because there's only one GUI, one sound player, and so on. With Mandrake, I got around ten or fifteen different GUIs to choose from.
