Six-year-old Afghan girl reportedly sold in marriage

KABUL: A 6-year-old girl in rural Afghanistan was reportedly sold in marriage recently to a Muslim cleric in his 50s or 60s. She was later rescued and held in a shelter, while the man was arrested and jailed, Afghan officials said last week.Afghan officials said last week. The incident, which came after several widely publicized cases of young brides being burned or stoned, highlights the enduring tribal practices of child marriage in Afghanistan, often involving abuse. The problem has persisted despite years of public education campaigns, women’s activists said, in part because poor parents need the income it brings.

Officials and relatives of the girl have given conflicting versions of the incident in northwestern Ghowr province, a remote and conservative area where Taliban militants have taken over several districts and imposed severe restrictions and punishments on women for moral offenses.
One account from local authorities said the arrested man, whom they identified as Mohammad Karim, told officials the child’s parents had “given” her to him as a “religious offering” about two weeks ago, while her family claimed she had been kidnapped. His name, age and status as a cleric are all still unconfirmed, however.

The provincial police chief, Mohammad Andarabi, told The Washington Post that the man, whom he named as Sayed Abdul Karim, had married the girl with the parents’ consent in front of witnesses, after they accepted food and cash in payment. Later the man tried to return her, he said, but was seized by residents and turned over to the police.
“The girl is safe . . . she has not been molested,” Andarabi said. Both Karim and the girl’s father have been arrested for questioning, he said. Provincial officials said the girl had been taken to a women’s shelter in the provincial capital.

It's horrible. There was a case (I think it was in NY) just a few weeks ago - not Muslim, but same thing happened - the guy was preying on poor families and more or less buying their daughters. When they caught up with him, he had quite a few girls in the house; and apparently had fathered two children, IIRC. He had preyed exclusively on the Amish community; the oldest girl he had he insisted to the Amish that it was legal that they give him the daughter; she was 14 when he fathered the first of two children with her. He got the daughter because he had saved that family from financial ruin.

Incidentally, the monster who did this grew up as a Christian, not Amish, so there's blame to go around, not just to the Amish. In short, sick people out there. Apparently, it's a little easier to get away with it in several middle east countries. But, as the OP states, he was arrested - it's against the law there, but the law seems to be pretty weak in some tribal areas, and when you live in a shithole with horrible economy and are practically starving, selling a daughter to get money for food is probably seen by some as a lucrative opportunity.

You mean this guy.

And yeah, not only is it Afghan tribalism, but there's also an absurdly high degree of "respecting elders" there that makes this sort of thing an uphill battle. A 60ish cleric wouldn't be questioned readily by the average person.

Isn't this also prevalent in Masonite communities? Same gig that goes on with the Amish; women being considered little more than soft-headed broodmares.

Ah, religion. Don't you ever change.

I am reportedly outraged.

And to no one's surprise, MajinCry has absolutely no idea how the Amish live. No Amish man with testicles would try selling an Amish woman - they have rather a lot of power, if very little independence from societal pressure short of leaving.

Communities of people who make doors? Ohhhh, you mean Mennonite. 😛

We need to stop these motherfuckers!

Jeff Epstein has an island for girls. Doubt he's doing it for religious reasons.

This kind of horrible shit happens everywhere. Maybe not the selling part, but we have plenty of religious nuts who view females as little more than servants and baby machines.

Have we all forgotten about Warren Jeffs already?

Lord almighty, I made a wee bit o' a mistake. I still say the trees are up to no good.

Ah, but when you can chalk away all personal responsibility by just saying a prayer and accepting Jesus Christ as your saviour, what's a bit of sex slavery in the grand scheme of things? The good book is fine with the odd sex slave here and there, 'specially if they are part of a conquered people.

I do believe the Amish are well known to have rampant sexual abuse 'n' issues with sex slavery.

Y'know, stuff like this.

Some 90 percent of children raised Amish choose to stay in the community. But one who did not is 20-year-old Mary Byler.

"I would read books and I'd imagine. I had a great imagination that would take me to faraway places, you know, places where I was afraid I would never be, but wanted to be," she told "20/20's" Elizabeth Vargas.

Mary says she'd use those fantasies as an emotional escape from what she says was her horrible reality -- a childhood and adolescence of sexual assault and rape.

"If somebody was raping me, I'd look up to the ceiling, count the blocks or count the cracks in the wall, or just I was completely not there emotionally. I would have committed suicide many times over if I wouldn't be strong," she said.

Through the years, by Mary's account, she was raped by several different attackers. But one abused her more often than the others -- her brother Johnny.

Johnny, one of Mary's eight brothers, began assaulting her when he was 12 and she was 6. The assaults continued into her teen years, she said.

...

Irene Garrett left the Amish community to marry an outsider and has written several books on Amish life. Sadly, Garrett says, Mary's plight is not an isolated case.

"Overall in an Amish community, women are very quiet, they're very submissive," Garrett said.

Amish women are not taught anything about sex, according to Garrett, which makes it even harder for a girl who's being abused to describe what's happening to her.

Mary said she didn't know how to describe what was happening. "I thought they were being bad to me. That was the only word I had to express it," she said.

In an Amish culture unaccustomed to women speaking up, Mary felt she got more scolding than sympathy when she told her mother what was going on.

She said her mother told her, "You don't fight hard enough and you don't pray hard enough." Mary said her mother made her feel as if the assaults were her fault. "Every time I would talk about this she would say that they have already confessed in church and you're just being unforgiving," she said.

But keep on keepin' on, I guess.

I knew an 'Amish refugee' in Maryland. While I didn't know her well enough to bring up this topic and hear her views, there was a lunch she and I attended where someone did bring up her childhood. Her restrained, vague answers along with losing the color from her face made it pretty clear she was abused. I remember everyone kinda stopped eating lunch and didn't resume. The woman who asked felt like absolute shit, saw her crying on the way to her car.

It was because of that I started watching Breaking Amish. Sexual abuse in Amish communities is far more widespread than most want to admit. 🙁

I'm just starting to think of the OP as "FUD MAN" in my head these days.

Seems to be the nature of most of the posts.

That would imply that they value human rights.
Instead what you see is human nature.

For our history is filled with countless examples of societies abusing others for labor or pleasure. This abuse is simply what humans do at a base level. Then those who felt the pain of that abuse banded together to form better societies, such as those in the West.

It is a constant struggle against those who abuse others. Because you will find them in all corners of the world. To fight that struggle on our behalf, on the behalf of human rights, you need strong institutions (often governments) who also value those rights and will fight for them. You need to educate locals and enforce the law.

And yet despite our best efforts such things will still occur. The capacity for good and evil is in all of us.

Where is the outrage? It's not against the law. They're following the law. Laws are always just and fair and moral.

Pay attention.

Where is your liberal love and tolerance? I thought you liberals were more accepting of different cultures?

Objection, assumes facts not in evidence.

Where is your defense of religious freedumb, the right to fuck kids because your imaginary sky friend tells you to? See how this works?

We have no right to judge other cultures and religions.

False, and we certainly have the right to judge child raping nutjobs for their actions. Maybe you missed my mention of Jeffs. Sounds like you also missed where to comment on the topic, instead of regurgitating your favorite talk radio tripe.

Do you conservative buddies a favor and shut your ignorant hole. Or you could keep doing those horrible liberals a favor and spew away. Your call.

I want to know where the liberal love and tolerance is at?

Or maybe, just maybe, there are limits to liberal love and tolerance?

This happens regularly at our "friends" the Saudis, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for our "alliance."
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/nov/08/saudi-arabia-child-brides-marriage

Atgaa, 10, and her sister Reemya, 8, are about to be married to men in their 60s. Atgaa will be her husband's fourth wife. Their wedding celebrations are scheduled for this week and will take place in the town of Fayaadah Abban in Qasim, Saudi Arabia.

The girls are getting married because their financially struggling father needs the money that their dowries will provide: young girls of this age can fetch as much as $40,000 each.

Many readers might be shocked at this news. How can it be legal? The answer is that Saudi Arabia has no minimum age for marriage, and it is perfectly legal to marry even an hour-old child.
