Six sigma isn't the magic bullet for production and manufacturing?

Dilbert

I learned about six Sigma in mgmt class years ago. I thought it was great stuff.

Normally, Dilbert is at least somewhat factual, if not 99% true.

But in this case, it's at odds w/common belief.

Who's right?

What do you call someone from lower management who is moved to upper management?

It's the most awful waste of resources ever known to mankind. Six Sigma that is. Good idea, horribly burueaucratic implementation.

Dilbert is probably correct.

Isn't six sigma just the repackaging of older quality systems with nothing new brought to the end user other than presenting it in a different way?

My dad does a lot of work with Six Sigma. He's a Polymer Engineering Consultant...

Apparently the Mexicans need it more than anyone else he's ever seen. The injection moulding plants in Tijiuana are beyond horrid, even though they have brand-new equipment and had German instructors on the equipment, they still call my dad several times per week, asking for help.

That's why the Quality Control for those Jettas made in Mexico was so poor.

I used to work at GE. THey are one of, if not THe, biggest Six Sigma users. But of course the company sis huge so they need something to keep things running. We even trained people form other places on how Six SIgma works and it was one damn expensive class.

I thin the problem is with having Germans instruct Mexicans who are working for Americans :D

GE is the company that made six sigma popular among big business.

Six Sigma is just awful. It was big in the '90s and the first few years of the new milenium. At this point in history it is nothing more than lip service. My company was big on six sigma a few years ago. They were always promoting it. They had on-line classes for it. They posted regular updates on projects that black belts and green belts were working on, etc... Now I barely ever hear of it. Anyone who isn't an upper layer manager will laugh heartily any time it gets mentioned.

I've heard enough horror stories about it. The jist of it is that it is a system to promote fewer defects. The goal of six sigma is to have no more than 3 defects per million. In business it translates to like 99.9999 percent efficiency. Oh, it's easy to get to that first 95% and challenging to reach 97 or 98% efficiency. The problem is improving from that point. Where do you go from there to make budget cuts when the fat has all been trimmed? At that point they begin to cut into things like office supplies. It's been so bad at times that it would be next to impossible to find a pen unless you brought in your own from home.

In my experience, companies are abandoning it in droves now.

I've never dealt with six sigma, but I had my ISO experience and Dilbert was absolutely right about that.

Actually it was Motorola.

I'm a Six Sigma Greenbelt, but I only use it for projects that I'm a Subject Matter Expert or Greenbelt resource. There's not much use for it for my specific job. Our company saved quite a bit last year improving or establishing processes last year. It's good when properly used.

EDIT: It sounds like the people who were running the Six Sigma team at Icepick work place were utter fools. It's not about specifically cutting budgets and things like office supplies. It's a fact base and data driven methodology used to improve or establish business processes. It's mainly deployed to prevent defects in manufacturing and service-related processes.

Shhh! Don't tell anyone.

My company is on to "Lean Sigma" now. I try to ignore it.

What I've heard about various "Sigma" things is kinda mixed. Apparently it can work well for situations where you are trying to make an existing infrastructure more efficient at doing a particular task or set of tasks that don't change much (or at all). It doesn't apply so well to situations where you have to develop whole new business practices, or you are in an industry that changes constantly.

But I'll side with Dilbert on just about anything business-related. I've seen a few Six Sigma cartoons, and they're all both negative and hilarious if you have any experience with it.

I've never really experienced much with Six Sigma, but I've seen the stuff around at work and how it's supposedly super awesome. Never really gave the stuff more than a passing glance, but supposedly based on that glance... it works for us.
