I don't get it, how, if the ride malfunctioned, does only one person wind up losing their feet....?

negative acceleration and weight. f=ma. live it, learn it, love it.

unless your feet get cut off.

Some of the best doctors in the world for hand/feet are right here in Louisville. I have a feeling she'll be just fine. We transplanted a hand, reattaching feet should be straight forward.

Also heard on the news this morning that ALL rides of this type at ALL 6 flags are closed.

LOL, yeah that quote about striking the young lady on the back side of my children was something else, it definitely gave me a vivid image of the person saying it.

This incident reminds of The Edge at Six Flags Great America (same type of ride)

The other day I was reading some article how safety precautions for amusement parks have little to no Govt action in the result of an incident.

This is one case where the amount of money they lose due to lawsuits and negative publicity is more than enough to ensure that they do everything possible to avoid accidents. I forsee a lot of people changing their plans to go to six flags this weekend.

Case in point. Name another business where one single object breaks, and then they immediately shut down or recall every other identical object. Amusement parks already have a greater motivation than the government can provide. A couple of accidents close together and they could be out of business.

Jesus...I hope they can reattach her feet. At the very least she deserves a few million dollars for this.

(CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

During the ride, passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped, according to the park's Web site.

Passengers drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," it adds.

"Feel the adrenalin rush of rapid ascent to the dizzying summit. That's when the Kryptonite kicks in and suddenly you're plummeting 177 harrowing feet to the pavement below," the description says.

The ride was introduced in 1995.

It used to be called "The Hellevator."

should'a been named "The Amputator"

seriously, though.. poor girl. i really hope they can re-attach her feet.

Terrible accident. I hope they manage to reattach her feet.

Off topic question though... why is it that whenever I see news clips from the South, that I start questioning whether or not the people interviewed actually have any branches in their family trees??

To be honest, my wife and I have discussed this very same subject. Seems that the cameras in this area (KY) really attract a certain "breed" of people. But to all, not everyone is like those people.....spidey07 and myself as examples. ;)

To the OP...I just couldn't imagine...I just couldn't imagine this happening and really hope the girl has a miracle recovery...but it's going to be difficult.

To the poster that mentioned about liberal activist judges and her going after money....and someone calling him (that poster) a troll....well, prick is more like it, IMO!

I wasn't trying to be the funniest - I think we got off on the wrong foot

that said, we shouldn't automatically kick all the other jokes out

for anyone else thinking of posting a joke, please - put your best foot forward

Scary. I've ridden that ride, though it was about 5 years ago and was called the Hellevator back then.

Now the King's Island I go to has one much larger, I think it's 300 feet. I'll think twice before getting on that one I guess.

Dang, just read an update on CNN. Someone posted this already, but apparently they were torn off by the cable wrapped around her feet... And I was about to get lunch.

A more open and shut case I've never seen. She deserves millions for this. You certainly don't go to an amusement park and expect to have limbs hacked off by the rides there.

I'm trying to figure out which coworkers I could safely tell it to. I think I;m just going to have to wait until I get out of work.

Why do people have such a knee-jerk reaction when stuff like this happens?

"Oh I'm never going to ride on these after reading this'

It was a freak accident, you have more of a chance of getting in a car wreck on the way to the park than this ever happening. Would those same people never ride in a car again?

edit: furthermore, why did six flags close the same ride at other parks the same day? To appease said people mentioned above I imagine.

Yeah, cause identical pieces of equipment could never have the same material/design failure.

And if the first girl gets a settlement that ends in 6 zeroes, happening again shortly after the first would be a judgment that ends in 9 zeroes.
