Hey there,

Finally upgrading my Asus M2N-E after 6 years and at least 3 processors :)
Currently using a Phenom II 925 X4 (2.8Ghz)

Have bought a refurb Asus M5A97 EVO and 16 GB of 1866 DDR3 Ram and wondering about better CPU...

FX-6100 3.3Ghz - $105
Phenom 1045T1055T 2.7Ghz - $100

This will be for general use, probably the things I would most see benefit from would be Encoding/rendering Video files.

Will not be used for gaming!

I picked those processors because I want to keep it at 95 watts power rating for the CPU.
Mainly just because and I can keep my original 460/500 watt power supplies (including backups that are standing by!)

And I can get either one new in box with a 3 year warranty for around the same price.
Although I will be using my existing cooler since I recently got a new fan for it!

Can the Bulldozer be so bad is my question? Or should I stick to Phenom?
Will be running at stock voltages/speeds or possibly very slightly above.

Thanks!

You probably cannot go wrong with either, they should both be a decent step up from a Phenom II 925. How often is your system idle vs under load? AFAIK the FX-6100 should use significantly less power while idle than Phenom II X6(and generate less heat), at least that's what I see comparing my 1090t machines to my FX-8350. I would probably go with the FX-6100 if it were me with it being a newer architecture, but I think neither is a bad decision at ~$100

Thx IC,

That a great point and it is important to keep idle temps down.
So I will go with the FX.

I also plan to make this PC as quiet as possible...
Already have a fanless video card, it's a Lian Li case which is fairly quiet with the top exhaust fan unplugged (I just pulled it today :)!

Best thing is this whole upgrade is only around $60 after reselling old stuff on eBay!
Due to used vs new memory/cpu pricing, Yay!

I like to keep it cheap HaHa

Why you got a fanless card? Can't you spend on a case that has great sound dampening, like Antec?

Unless your motherboard doesn't support it, why would you even fathom choosing an FX 6100 over a Vishera FX 6300 that is much improved?

The Lian Li case I have absolutely rocks:

Actually looking at the FX 6 core and seeing it's really a 3 core...

Might just stick with the 925 for a little bit and see if there's a noticeable difference and then go to the 8 core FX when the prices drop some more...also see if there's any 95 watt'ers in the 8 core range, I see one that looks ripe for a price drop soon :)

Are you near a Microcenter? They have a combo deal where you pay $119 for the FX-6300 and you get a free motherboard. You could resell the new free motherboard and recoup some cost to potentially bring the price below either of your two original numbers.

Clock-for-clock the Phenom II X6 beats the FX 6100, but the 6100 is clocked almost 25% higher at default speeds.
If/when you do overclock, overclocking the FX will be easier with the unlocked multiplier.
Power consumption will be slightly better overall with the FX-6100, especially when overclocked.

The FX-6100 gets my vote, but if you can swing it the FX-6300 dominates them both.

I would keep my Phenom II X4 for a little longer and go for the FX8320, in a couple of months the price could fall.

But if you need to upgrade now, i would go for the FX6300

The low wattage, high-end AMD cpus typically maintain their price throughout the entire product cycle and are usually OEM only making them tough to find. If you are stuck on 95w, you might want to grab an Fx-8100 or Fx-8300(piledriver version) when you come across it.

He said he wants to stay within 95w of power, which the 8320 far exceeds.

FX8300 (boxed,FD8300WMHKSBX)-95W. It's only available in Asia for now, hopefully it will show up in Europe and USA soon.

If you really wanted the 8 core FX, you could always undervolt/underclock an 8320/8350 to keep it @95W or less.

There's probably no difference between an 8300 and an 8320 other than default voltage and clocks. You could pick up an 8320 and undervolt it and everything would likely be fine.

Thanks guys...

Got the board today, sweet looks brand new (it's a Asus warranty replacement/refurb I bought on Ebay). Checked the warranty and it's good till Dec 2014. nice deal for $57 :)

Although I would have def gone fore one of those Microcenter deals if I was near a store...Temporarily in NC where there are none :(

Think I'll just stay with my trusty Phenom II 925 for a little while...
Funny thing is that old 925 sells for up to $100 on eBay used weird! Some strange pricing.

It will be interesting to see how much of a difference I see with the MB and RAM upgrade:
8gb DDR2 800 / 6400 >> 16GB DDR3 1866 / 14900

Memory is on the truck for delivery :)
