Situation with my Roommate...

I moved here (Florida) in September with one of my friends, and through church I found a guy close to my age that had an apartment with a bedroom that wasnt filled, so I moved in and started paying rent ($540 a month.) Going in, I was told that this guy was very clean and hated clutter. Come to find out, he's a complete slob, and on a dialy basis I've been cleaning up his messes. He has a cat, and about a month ago he just started keeping it locked in his bathroom (master br with jacuzzi) and he filled the bathtub with kitty litter. Not too long after, he noticed that the cat had fleas, so he locked it out on our lanai/porch. Since then, it has gone to the bathroom all over the place, and he has not cleaned any of it. He uses my bathroom because his MASTER BATHROOM is full of fleas, and now they're everywhere, including my bedroom. This is just absolutely disgusting to me; I'm a very clean person and I hate messes. Now I'm not sure what to do, I don't really have anywhere else to stay and my roommate doesnt seem to care about the situation...he bought two flea collars and a bottle of some spray stuff thinking it would fix the whole situation. What would you do in this situation?

Cliffs:
- Move in with supposed "clean" guy
- Turns out to be complete slob
- His cat gets fleas, they spread through entire apartment
- I have nowhere else to stay, not sure what to do

Thoughts anyone?

Call Animal Control ASAP - they will come out and after one look at the place, they'll take the cat for its own protection. That is unsanitary, unsafe, and very likely illegal.

Get lots of pictures - go buy a cheapo disposable camera if you have to. That way if he comes after you for rent money, you can demonstrate why you had to leave.

Then GTF out. At $540 per month, you can find somewhere else to stay pretty quickly.

for one thing: Frontline gets rid of fleas fast, but you gotta get it at the vet.

another thing: maybe you should find a new place to live.

It's time to get the hell out of there.

Who the hell fills a bathtub with kitty litter?

I bet he passed the fleas to the poor cat....

And after you move out, you should let the landlord know the state of his apartment.

Good point - OP: have you contacted the landlord? He may be have another place you could move to right away. Worth a shot.

call the humane society or animal police first off. have him fined for animal cruelty and neglect.

second, you're paying for sharing the master bathroom right? if he's filling the tub with kitty litter, you go out and hire some cleaning crew to clean up his mess (both in the BR and the erradication fo the fleas), then have them bill HIM.

third, take his mess, clean it up, but dump it in his room with a big note that says
"I'm sick of cleaning your sh1t up, so here it is, clean it up yourself"

Disgusting. That's a sh1tty situation man. Hopefully you'll be able to make a clean exit from him because he doesn't sound like he's going to change his ways. Also, go punch in the nose whoever told you the guy was "clean".
