I'm sitting in my bed surfing on my iPaq (206MHz) with 56K modem and it seems zippier than my Athlon 735MHz system:Q And this isn't just with Anandtech, it's with most other pages as well...

PocketIE (based on IE5) displays the pages the same and I even get the banners and all the colors, forum functions, etc.

Go figure ;)

There's been a few things called iPaq. Which one exactly are you talking about?

Brrrrr. Ugly little ah heck, isn't it? BTW, just so you know, I AM jealous, and wish I had one BAD. --But it's still ugly as hell. Does it use regular dialup? I assume it's WinCE.... Can you install netzero or anything on it?

<< PocketIE (based on IE5) >>

Actually it's based on IE3, and thats probably why it seems faster. IE5 has to worry about so much bloat now since MS has just been piling more and more on top of the browser code, much like Netscape up until Mozilla. Most users haven't noticed it since PC's have been getting faster and faster. But install IE2 (The last IE that could be installed without breaking the IE integration), and it will seem a lot zippier on web sites then IE5.

PocketIE on the Handheld PC's is more based off of IE4. Keep in mind thats due to the HPC's typicially being faster then the PSPC's, but in the case of the iPaq, it's a quick little machine running a very slimline IE.

I'm using Juno right now with the DUN hack;)

And from the reviews I read in PocketPC mags, PocketIE that comes on PocketPC's is based on IE5 (which would explain autocomplete) and the fact that it displays Anandtech and the forums just fine. They look like crap w/IE3.

More info on PocketIE:

http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/bguide/features/web.asp

Also:

<< PIE supports HTML 3.2, framesets, tables, Jscript 1.1 (Not full-blown Java applets though), SSL for access to secure sites, and even ActiveX. That means that you can use Pocket Internet Explorer to view almost any Web page that exists today. PIE also supports XML/XSL, enabling browser-based enterprise and business-to-business applications. >>

The DUN hack? If that's the hack to get the banner thing off, I could never get that to work. F@CKING JUNO. Damn.

Sorry, should have said IE3 code with IE5 features and standards support thrown in. The browser definitly dosen't act like IE5 when dealing with web servers. It even identifies it's self as : "Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; 240x320)"

(Taken from web logs of my server when hitting it with PIE on the iPaq.

NFS4: Do you have one of the "new" iPAQs (the one with the plain -- instead of italicized -- "i")? Compaq called me up out of the blue today to tell me that they're sending a replacement for the one I bought in October. Didn't have to buy a carePAQ. I wish they'd mess up and accidentally send me a 3660 (64MB RAM). ;)

What are your favorite software/hardware addons for your iPAQ? I can't wait until DataPlay and cyPAQs are available. :D
