does anyone know of a relatively large/current list of sites that, once you have signed up with them for a free giveaway or contest, are known to send out relentless spam? this is actually for a research item our technology group is working on, and not for any illicit purpose. i know that some people on the hot deals forums have complained of relelntless spam once they've signed up for a free account or a free giveaway. i'm trying to gather as much of that info in one place. thanks all.

why don't you sign up for some yourself? :p

Actually, sometimes when you sign up for a few, you get spam from different places, (ie not the original sites) and you can't trace which sites gave your email address away, if any...

actually we already have signed up for some ourselves, using expendable email accounts created for that very purpose. our intention is to try to trace patterns of spam lists, tracing what emails an account receives after it's been used to sign up at a single site, and never used for any other purpose. that way we can be fairly certain that the address wasn't found/seen anyplace else and can, with some accuracy, trace what sites an email address is sold to, and what sites it is bought from. hey, it's the idea of the directors of our group, not ours, but they intend to use the data to trace the flow of email address list sellers.

and pepsi90919, i'm not sure why you might think that's a reason to get banned. it's actually a pretty cool research project.

hendon, that was the obvious first choice, along with sites that deal with pirated software and mp3 search engines. another was to post a single message to a usenet forums, or a yahoo club, but in that case the source can't be traced with any accuracy.

thanks for the link. that is indeed helpful. i'm surprised that juno.com is not listed as one of their top sites since that's quickly become an isp that is used heavily for spamming. anyway, thanks for the tip.

yeah well it's well known that spammers have packet sniffers on the edges of the hotmail network and they scan outgoing messages for their source address. very similar to what goes on if you've ever sent an email to, or received one from, an aol.com address. it's also curious, however, that while some hotmail accounts begin to be spammed with massive amounts of email almost from the day they are first created, others are never bothered at all, regardless of how much they are or are not used.

Actually alot of hotmail spamming is just a shotgun approach. Doug@hotmail.com, Dougb@hotmail.com, Dougc @hotmail.com....etc etc etc. They just fire every combination at it and thats how some accounts that never used get spam. The email account that I had at work had spam in it when I logged into it for the first time.
