What I found is that you should download all available updates for IE6 before you try.
Also, corporate Winblows Update is still not a great solution. For example, do a search for NVIDIA video drivers. Even for the same version of a driver, the corporate updates search returns multiple hits that appear identical. Also, when I downloaded the NVIDIA drivers, it just saves a .CAB file. Apparently, the user is expected to realize that you need to uncompress the .CAB file and then update the driver manually.
Another weakness is that it keeps a hidden catalog of previous downloads. However, if you reinstalled your OS, the catalog is gone, even if you saved the complete downloaded updates directory. It should be smart enough to inspect the updates directory and rebuild the catalog of previously downloaded updates.
