i can't remember, but is there a site that'll tell you how many sites are being hosted on a single server? this would be to test if a web host is overselling.

thanks for the link.

i was comparing a site hosted with Dreamhost (slow) vs. a site hosted with Moreweb (quick). interestingly, the moreweb host seems to be hosting 283 sites while the dreamhost is at 35.

although moreweb only allows for 3 databases while i think dreamhost offers "unlimited" databases. also, moreweb has 50GB bandwidth, while dreamhost is at 1TB. could those be factors causing the slow speeds as well?

That's not a very accurate comparision. The number of sites does not concide with performance. You have to factor in how resource intensive the sites are and how much traffic they receive as well as the server specs. DreamHost actually has strict CPU usage limits so you won't be able to use all of the bandwidth. As far as the databases, you can stick the same amount of info in 1 database, or split it into 3. Also, due Dreamhost's pricing they target to a clientbase that's more likely to abuse the servers.

is the best way to judge the difference between the two, just by "feel"? one site is definitely quicker than the other and i need to chose between the two hosts. it's for an online forum.

Yes, and user testamonials.
