My father and i are growing tired of repairing my sisters computer as her and my other sister install programs whenever they pop up. So i have password protected the Administrator account. She is running XP Professional SP2.

THe problem lies with 2 things. I would like to make her and my other sister power users, we do not want them having full administrative privileges. However i cant find how to change her account and my other sisters account to power users. I only can find the option to change to limited user, which I feel is TOO restricted.

Next, her computer somehow got it into memory that it will autologin no matter what. So everytime the computer boots it boot to the administrator account without prompting for password. Where do i turn this feature off.

Finally if the passwords are forgotten, HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely for me, but how would i retrieve them. I do not want to, or know how to hack, im asking is there a file that contains the passwords for the accounts, or some way i can gain access if something goes wrong or happens to the admin account?

Auto login: Those are instructions to turn it on. They should be adequate for turning it off (I don't know for sure, I've never tried it ;)).

When I setup my XP machine I didn't see any "power user" account. I set myself up as a regular user, and it's working fine.

Forgot the admin password? Use ntpasswd (passwdnt?) to delete it. Do a search, it's easy to find and shouldn't be tough to use. Just delete the password, it's safer.

if you are worried about losing the adminstrator password when you disable the autologin, just change it to something you know before you make any other changes.

Ive been asked this many times by customers with "install everything" kids. From what i know XP doesnt have power user accounts, seems its a relic from win 2k/nt.

Question... are you saying that they have their own accounts as well? But. still loads into xp via admin account?

Well what I usually suggest is getting firefox and good use of a firewall to block those ad and junkware ips. Limited accounts are fine... they just have to come ask you to install soemthing from an admin account whenever they need it. (i dont have an idea of how old your sisters are)

If not you can sit there and take the time to set up security/file permissions as well as quotas and crap.

thats a good place to start to get close to power user status.

No, I definitely saw "Power User" when I was poking around with my own sister's comp several months ago. It's still there.
