Hi, I am building a low end system with a K6-200. Which video card would be better for basic computing & a few games, an Aopen PT80 based on the SIS6326 chip or a STB Velocity 128, both have 4mb SGRAM.

Thanks..

Hi Rhonda.

I have had some experience with the SiS card, and it is stable, but very basic. Where do you live? As here in London, 8Mb cards are pretty much the base, and I thought that that was the same when I was last in the States (Tx). I don't think that you'll see much difference between the two cards.

The STB Velocity is faster by a fair margin. The SiS 6326 to its credit has all the necessary features but it wasn't made to be the fastest 3D card, it was made to be a cheap card for system builders to use that was able to do the most possible.

For gaming the STB Velocity will be the winner and it has fairly good 2D quality also.

I happen to have owned an 8mb SiS6326 AGP and a 4mb STB Velocity PCI at one time. The STB completely smoked the SiS in every game and benchmark imaginable. The only advantage the SiS seemed to hold was desktop 2D at high res and "maybe" .avi playback, which was acceptable to me at the time since I already had a V2 SLI doing all of the 3D chores.
