I'm really interested in getting one of these and I don't really care which. I just want it quickly! Do any resellers have boards based on this chipset in stock? (Abit, Asus, Shuttle ... all ok)

If not, any guesses as to who will have it first?

Checked Atacom ... ~ $155 and its on backorder, same as everyone else on pricewatch. Thanks, though.

It's fairly fast, has good features (including agp 8x, serial ata ... yes, i know these wont be fully utilized for some time but its still nice to have) and is relatively cheap

If Intel could get off its butt and release a new chipset supporting agp 8x / pc 2700 + / serial ata ... id be jumping all over it, but this is all ive got in the near future

ASUS P4S8X, ABit SR7-8X, Shuttle AS45GT/R, and there might be one or two other out right now...you can either search for them at pricewatch.com or pricegrabber.com. either way, the above boards are all on sale now...its just a matter of whether they are back ordered or not...

What is their need to release this right now? I know of no 8x cards, the 845(e) runs pc 2700 +, and what am I going to do with serial ata right now?

New products and chipsets are nice, but why the rush to upgrade?

There is no NEED. But it's nice to be proactive and forward looking. It's reasonable to assume that agp 8x and serial ata will become at least somewhat useful by the end of the lifecycle for the current cpu's available.

Anyway, I've got a preorder for a 648 ... will just have to wait.

Oh, and there certainly is a personal need to rush this 'upgrade,' because I'm upgrading from nothing. (or a broken and sold amd setup to be exact)

the thing is, the p4 can really take advantage of faster ram than just ddr333 or ddr266, and the SIS648 wont run anything faster and be stable....

If you're looking at the Abit version of the 648 I would reconsider if you're into overclocking. I had the board for 2 days and after extensive testing, the best I could get was ~137 FSB with components that would do 170+ FSB in my Asus P4B266. Something to think about. If you went with another company, please report back your findings :)

I'm not real into overclocking, but if I can squeeze a few megahertz out with default voltage then maybe.

I've read about people's issues with the Abit. I'm taking a gamble on the Asus board and I'll let you know how it goes once it arrives.

Mski, I know that the 648 is dodgy with anything above ddr 333. If I didn't already own a 512mb stick of corsair cas2 pc2700, I might wait for something else, but as is, it'll suit me just fine.
