I recently went to those x-rated link. I know, I know...I was having one of those nights, I figured just one time. Well, needless to say, I caught PC ghonorrea in the form of Ilook-up toolbar that got installed automatically onto my IExplorer toolbar, and SirSearch started taking over when I do searches. I ran Spybot and it got rid of Ilookup. I also ran Adaware to get rid of other spyware. I reset my IExplorer settings to their default. I could not get rid of the toolbar even after doing those things. I then went into windows/downloaded programs and got rid of Ilookup file from there. I finally got rid of it from IExplorer, but it also took my yahoo toolbar.
I thought I was done, but alas, when I went to reinstall my legit yahoo toolbar, the install file completed fine but the toolbar didn't appear. I tried this several times to no avail. The yahoo toolbar will not install on my IExplorer, and also, I can't get rid of SirSearch when I click on the search button. I had followed instructions from an XP tips site on how to get Google to be the default when you type a query on the address bar, but now when I follow the instructions, it won't do it. SirSearch keeps taking over after the MS takes over when I set IExplorer to default. Google won't work at all.

I hate XXX sites.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Are you able to run HijackThis and get rid of the offending browser helper objects? Also you might want to check your hosts file (usually in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) and make sure that everything after the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" is gone...

Hope this is of some help.

I tried Adaware, then Hijack this, then Spybot. I was able to get rid of all spyware and adware. It seems that SirSearch is a valid setting that is not picked up by cleaners. I finally gave up and restored my system from a backup. I will NOT indulge in XXX material anytime soon.

Thanks for the help.

PS. I was reading afterwards that you have to check on a setting in IExplorer that allows third party toolbars to work..I think that would have allowed the yahoo toolbar to install.
