XM > * Tons of different artists over a good range of music, good comedy channel, good sports channels, good talk channels, what more could you ask for?

From my observations, I've found that Sirius seems it has much higher quality stations. Every XM station I listened to sounded like it was produced by a couple teenagers in mom's basement. The Sirius stations sound a lot more professional.

Yeah I just signed up for a FREE 3 day Trial of Web XM, So far it's pretty cool.

how is it cool? just cause its radio online? the sound quality is terrible, the selection is poor, and the music is not good. I tried the free 3 days and was not satisified at all.

Well that's the reason I want it for her! If I may not get reception then I don't need either
How could I find out.

Well,

1) I enjoy how the comedy channels just air short segments of comedy skits so in case you don't think the person is teh funnay a new person will be on soon. under 5 minutes.

2) I am just using my laptop speakers to listen so I can't compare them to your $5,000 7.1 surround setup you must have, It sounds fine for me after all it's just radio.

3) I like how there are no commercials (At least on the channels I was listening to).

4) I like how the music is in catagories (Even by decades).

5) I like how it tells you whats playing currently (Titles and Track).

6) I like the selection of talk radio they offer.

7) I like how they play the COMPLETE song, not end it short like most FM stations do.

8) There are WAY more stations than FM/AM for certains kinds of music.

Those of course are IMHO.

XM came with my car and so far I like it. I don't listen to FM anymore. The only cons I have are:

1. The sound quality requires getting used to. It's better than FM for sure, not as good as CD. But the tricky part is it sounds a bit strange. Not bad, but different. Some people say too tinny. I think it sounds a bit mono. It's hard to explain.

2. There are too many stations and are a distraction when driving. Ok, not really a complaint but it's actually much simpler on FM when you really only can listen to 4-5 stations in your area.

XM has very good variety of music, but the compression they use makes good metal sound like crap. You won't notice it much if you listen in a car, though.

FI: listen to Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger...then listen to it with soup cans over your ears for the one XM plays. For warm sounding music, it does a good job.

No denying XM lacks a bit in talk, but it still has quite a bit available.

Ive heard that XM signal works better within buildings compared to Sirius....

Yes an no...

In big cities this CAN be true. Sirius has more satalites, so usually you can get a good signal most places. XM doesn't so they use repeaters in all the big cities, which keeps the signal good even with all the big buildings around. Sirius doesn't have to use repeaters since they have 3 satalites up in the sky, so you can get a signal from most places.

Sirius has NPR & NPR Talk

How's that not redundant?

NPR Now features a combination of news and entertainment programs, including News & Notes with Ed Gordon, public radio favorites Car Talk, Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me!, and Fresh Air; plus a host of programs from local stations and independent producers. NPR Now's fresh approach and distinct programming are setting standards and defining the sound of NPR in a new way. Local and national call-in shows are available on the NPR Talk channel.

NPR Talk features some of public radio's best call-in shows, including Talk of the Nation, The Diane Rehm Show, and Forum from KQED. Listeners can join smart conversation across the nation throughout the day on NPR Talk. Challenging and changing the way people listen to radio, NPR Talk is defining the next generation of NPR. News and entertainment programs are available on the NPR Now channel.

I've had a MyFi portable XM for a couple of months now. I like it quite a bit. If you are going to get her a portable player, XM is the CLEAR choice because the myfi is worlds better than the delphi equivalent.

I voted for sirius because of the nfl content. XM has baseball and college sports, but I don't really care about either of those. In most other regards they seem about the same.

I've got both Sirius and XM. I like metal/rock music, and XM just axed their new metal channel...so I'm still kinda pissed about that. If she's into talk, I'd go with Sirius. They've got the full lineup of Air America, two channels of NPR programming, and a bunch of original shows on their comedy and "general talk" stations.

As for sports, it just depends on what you're into. If you like the NFL, NBA, NHL, NASCAR (in 2007), or college football and basketball (they've also started running some NCAA Hockey and Women's basketball), get Sirius. If you like the MLB, get XM.

Edit...

And there are rumors that XM will be raising their monthly price to $12.95 starting in April, which will put both services at exactly the same price point.

Sirius is working on a wearable unit, called the Xact ReGo, which will be able to play MP3s and record live Sirius programming...rumor has it that it'll be out by June.

I'd have to say Sirius for the fact that I listen to the Pure Octaine(Hard Rock) and the Hard Attack(Heavy Metal) channels on Dish. The selection of music is great.
I'd have to say I didn't USE XM per se, but I was in Target and I was trying ot get a good rock station, and I was kinda confused on how to use the player. I kept getting random channels. 😕

You can listen to Sirius as well with a trial if you go to their website. You just can't stream the news channels and stuff, but you can listen to the music.

the portable satillite receivers pretty much do NOT work indoors unless you also have the base-station to boost reception. they get no reception by themselves unless they are outside.
