Siri is pretty cool.

I got the iPhone 4s today. I am upgrading from the iPhone 3g so its a big upgrade. I was presently surprised to find that Siri works.

The Good:

It is good at voice, better than any other voice recognition I have used before, better than I expected it would be. I find it surprisingly useful. It can set reminders, calendar events, e-mail, text message, set the alarm, find the closest starbucks, search the internet, ect. AND it usually works on the 1st try. It understands me perfectly on the 1st try about 75-80% of the time. And 90% of the time on the 2nd try. It worked perfectly while I was driving around 80mpg on the freeway today. It will read new text messages and e-mail to you when you ask. It is good and figuring out which contact you want to send an e-mail or text message to.

The Bad:

The voice recognition is not miraculous, it still misses words enough that it takes away some of the 'wow factor'. The prompt/button for when to speak is annoying. Often I find i am pressing the button at the wrong time or speaking at the wrong time. It has failed me at least once every time I have tried to show it off. It won't read reminders which seems silly.

Overall:
Over all I am impressed with Siri. When I first heard about it I didn't think that I would use it. I have had phones before that would let you say "call home" and I never used the feature. Google 411 would drive me crazy, but, Siri does not!

Haven't played with it a whole lot yet but the funny thing is they have actually programmed it to be a smart ass, I like it. I'll get a better chance to give it a real run today at work and really test it out. I spend a lot of time in a car at work so the voice tech of Siri really excites me.

Siri learns over time, correct?

I don't think so.

What it does do is use contact info for relationships and so on. You can add a contact for yourself so Siri knows who you are. Then you can say something like "Call me Master", and Siri will change the nickname on your contact to "Master" and call you that from then on. Or you could say "Jane Doe is my Mom", and if you have a contact named Jane Doe, Siri will add a relationship "Mom = Jane Doe". So you can then ask Siri to "Call Mom", etc, and it will dial Jane Doe.

You can also edit all of that manually in the contacts.

And yeah, Siri is pretty neat. Not perfect, but definitely useful, much more than just a novelty.

Been playing more with Siri. Definitely cool. It is limited.... Can't open apps or even bookmarks, but it can fully control music. Ask for a specific artist, song, genre etc.

Yeah, I tried asking it to open an app, and it just says it can't do that. :( I tried the "Open the pod bay doors" line as well, and I got the same thing you'd get when you ask to open an app, but I also got a second line, "are you happy now?" :p

does it work with noises in the background ?
my car has total voice control but it has to be absolute silence to recognise commands...passengers have to be quiet, windows up, no radio on

I tested it while driving to see my parents over the weekend. 80mpg on the highway and it was able to understand me very well. I didn't try it with the radio on, but, I assume that would cause problems.

I have seen Siri pick up words form background conversations before. It would most likely do the same with the radio.
