Buy a good SirF Star III GPS locator at $30, it is a good deal. I bought this package last year for $50. You can use the Microsoft streets and trips 2008 and any other GPS software such as Delome, iGo for PC, Mappoint and etc.

Perfect for laptop users. The new 2009 streets and trips version has updated maps. However I checked the Tanger outlets in Deer Park, Long Island, only the iGo 2009 Q1 map has the right roadway information. Streets and trips 2009, Google map, Bing map and other online maps have the old roads only. To me the difference between 2008 and 2009 is not noticeable.

Amazon has a BU-353 GPS locator (SirF Star III) $39.99 shipped, just FYI.

I'm in for one too. This software is really handy as it has all sorts of resturants and points of interest. The locator will work with Mappoint which has more geo-political info.

I was looking into this a couple years ago, and I think ST 2007 was pretty lousy as far as route recalculations and such goes. Not sure how 2008 does in this area (it might be better). Either way, you are correct for $33 shipped it's a nice deal just for the receiver and if you want to use other mapping software all the better.

On the downside, my laptop doesn't display well in the car in bright sunlight (even 100% brightness) and it's a bit of a pain to try and use the touchpad/trackpoint mouse to select options. Thus, imo, it's not really a substitute for a dedicated gps unit. But again, for $33 it's a nice deal and might be useful for an occasional traveler or as a backup option.

Thanks!

I've got trial ST 2009 installed with 2008 receiver. Routing is still kind of substandard, doesn't always chooses best route and last week when I was road tripping Michigan several times it tried to guide me on a dirt road in the middle of the forest with grass growing in the middle, wtf? In my experience no one has been able to beat google map routing so far. Restaurant information is not all that accurate and it does miss a lot of valid joints as well. Software itself is also a pain in the ass to use, no quick way to switch between modes, etc, takes some time getting used to. Overall still good deal, just be aware that software is not all that great, it's good, it does its job, just has issues.

I just went ahead and got it as well. Never had a GPS before and want to see how it'll work with my netbook. Btw, Bing has 10%-18% cashback at JR so I went through that and will hopefully get back a few more bucks for an even better deal.

JR never came up in my bing search, I may look for something else on jr and see if I can get bing to target that.

Searched for Nikon d90, found jr in the list of cash back stores, clicked through, search on jr for streets trips, bought the item, but no idea how much bing it just showed a range, like 4 to 14%.

Just got my Bing cashback message, says I'm getting $4.20 back, that's 14%, pretty nice considering it's already a great deal!
